NEW YORK -- The Mets watched the play of the Dodgers with focused interest over the weekend, curious to see the performance of one particular player, Jeff Kent. As the trading deadline moves closer, the Dodgers' second baseman becomes more prominent on the Mets' list. And according to one source familiar with the substance of discussions between the clubs, the Mets have inquired about Kent's availability.

Intersting.

At what price do you get Kent? What would LA want?

Remember how Bobby Bonilla Part I didn't work out, then they brought him back for a second stint? The Mets should learn from that. Yeah, Kent is a future Hall of Famer now, which was inconceivable when he was a Met, but he's older and unless they think they could win it all this year or next, plus are willing to put up with Kent hating New York again, they should avoid him. He signed with the Dodgers because he's from the area and a fan of the team.

He has horrible defense, but everyone else is in the diamond has very good D, so it makes up for it.

I dont know if Kent deserves a pass into the Hall. He had a late career jolt. Just because he won an MVP doesnt mean he is a HOF

His numbers for a second baseman are really good, that's why he'll get in. It'll probably take him a few years though, he shouldn't get in first ballot!

How many 2B are in the hall? Joe Morgan comes to mind. The thing about Kent though, is he didnt sustain his top level of play for very long. Its only been in the last 5 years he has elevated himself to superstar. Is that enough?

Believe me, Kent has the numbers to get in, anyway i'd rather have Kent than Soriano, at least i know he can hit in pitcher friendly ballparks!!!

I think it is Clark Kent the Eunuchs are interested in. Well, there go all our young pitchers.

Bonilla was brought back as a reserve. Normally id agree with you, but Kents bat would have an huge effect on this lineup.

Here's a guy with a .383 OBP that can come in here and bat 2nd immediatley and just make the lineup alot more potent having a patient contact hitter in front of Jose Reyes

Are you kidding me? It's not just because he won an MVP. You don't hear me saying Kevin Mitchell should be in the Hall. I hate the guy, but show me a second baseman not in the Hall with better numbers than Jeff Kent. Ever since he got to SF at age 29, he's been a star. If he stayed at 3B (came up as a 3B with Toronto) and put up his regular Met numbers (20 HR, 80 RBI), he wouldn't even be considered, but he went over to 2B and has put up unreal numbers for mostly good teams. He is in his 9th year of being a top offesive second baseman with no signs of slowing down.

Jordan, matty is right, check the numbers for yourself, for a 2nd baseman he's put up some great numbers!!!

Just randomly looked up Ryne Sandberg, Kent kicks his ass by 40 hr's and 250 RBI's.

And Kent has 3 more years left.

Exactly. The only thing that will hurt him is his attitude towards the media, but they won't let it stop him from getting in. He'll just lose a few first ballot votes.

I saw Ryne Sandberg play and he was an outstanding defensive 2nd basemen as well as a potent hitter. If I had to choose one I would definitely go with Sandberg. If the Eunuchs want Jack Kent they are going to have to give up the farm. BTW do you remember who the Eunuchs originally traded to get Kent and who came with him in the trade?

I thought it was him for David Cone straight up.

Then they sent him to Celvenland for Vizcaino and Baerga

For the record, I'd pick Sandberg for his all-around play too. I am the kind of guy who likes to keep the Hall to the elite. I think it's gotten watered down. However, when Kent retires, he will have among the best numbers ever for a second baseman. He played in an offensive era, but he was still far and above other 2B. Sure, one might have a better year than him in a particular year, but nobody will have put up anything close to those numbers over a 10-12 period in his era.

Before we give up the farm for this guy remember we thought we were getting studs when we traded for Roberto Alomar and Baerga.

One of which the Mets traded Jeff Kent for.

Good hitter, but atrocious defense. His "range" is only a few steps in each direction. His defense will cost us some games for sure.

Make the deal. The Mets need a cleanup hitter.

I'd much prefer Soriano, but if a deal can't be made there kent would be fine.

I looked at his stats last night, and they did jump out on me more than I thought they would. I see him being like a Jim Rice candidate, every year after those first 5 years he will be a candidate to get voted in, but he may not necessarily ever make it
