"Trade winds: Burnett the hot topic
O's emerging as favorite; deal reported as 'imminent'

MLB Headlines

The A.J. Burnett saga continued Monday, with several newspaper reports getting more and more specific about the future whereabouts of the hard-throwing, 28-year-old Florida Marlins right-hander.
The Baltimore Orioles appear to have emerged as the favorite in the bidding for Burnett, who can become a free agent next season. The Orioles are in the thick of the American League East race but could use some help with their starting pitching, which has been banged up and shaky over the last few months.

So a deal that would send Burnett to the O's would make sense, and it was written as an almost-done deal by The Baltimore Sun on Monday.

The Sun reported that the trade that would send Orioles reliever Jorge Julio to Florida for Burnett "is almost complete," with an announcement expected "to come today."

"The trade would send Burnett, third baseman Mike Lowell and perhaps Minor League outfielder Eric Reed to the Orioles for Julio, outfielder Larry Bigbie and top pitching prospect Hayden Penn," wrote The Sun.

The Orioles jumped ahead of the Boston Red Sox, according to The Sun, because of their willingness to take on Lowell, who has two years and about $20 million left on his contract. The Red Sox have reportedly offered Bronson Arroyo and prospects.

The possible Burnett deal also was reported in South Florida, with the Palm Beach Post weighing in and saying that "a multiplayer deal with the Orioles would be the Marlins' preference if the Orioles agree to take Lowell. Boston has offered a package that includes right-hander Bronson Arroyo. But 'that could change with a phone call,' according to a source who said about four other teams are interested."

One rumor that wouldn't die Monday was one originally reported Sunday that had Florida, Boston and San Diego getting together for a deal that would have Burnett and Lowell end up in Boston with Sean Burroughs and Arroyo going to Florida.

With Burnett's next scheduled outing set for Tuesday, it'll be interesting to see which uniform he ends up wearing.

Elsewhere around the grapevine:

Red Sox: The Providence Journal on Monday didn't waste much time shooting down one rumor. "One had the Red Sox involved in a blockbuster deal with the San Diego Padres, with the Sox sending David Wells, Kevin Millar and Trot Nixon off for Sean Burroughs, Adam Eaton and Ryan Klesko," The Journal wrote. "Just one problem: the two teams hadn't even talked."

Yankees: Impressed with New York general manager Brian Cashman's ability to get the Al Leiter deal done so quickly, the New York Post got in touch with Cashman in time for Monday's editions. Cashman told the Post that nothing is doing -- right now. "I have been busy talking today but there is nothing to report," Cashman told the paper. "I am not close to do anything today. Nothing is hot." The Post said the Yankees are "desperate" for starting pitching and mentioned the team's lack of a proven, healthy everyday center fielder.

Pirates: Apparently, all's not so well for Kip Wells if the right-hander was set on changing his address anytime soon. Both papers in the Steel City have different opinions on the situation, but both agree that Wells didn't necessarily help his trade value by being rocked for his sixth loss in seven starts in a 2 2/3-inning stint Sunday before a plethora of scouts. The Tribune-Review on Monday anticipated that Wells would remain in Pittsburgh, while the crosstown Post-Gazette wrote there's still a chance Philadelphia is interested. "The Phillies, desperately seeking a starting pitcher, could be desperate enough to make a run at Wells before the non-waiver trading deadline July 31," the Post-Gazette wrote. "The Phillies are dangling first baseman Jim Thome to see if they get any nibbles. If they can unload Thome and his huge contract, they would install power-hitting Ryan Howard at first base. But if the Phillies can't rid themselves of Thome, Howard almost certainly would be available. His left-handed bat would fit well at PNC Park."

Rangers: The Dallas Morning News on Monday reran a nugget from Toronto that had Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi not taking very long to shoot down a rumor that the Jays would trade outfielder Vernon Wells to Texas.

Rockies: A report in Monday's Rocky Mountain News said that it wouldn't be surprising if the Rockies trade newly acquired outfielder Eric Byrnes or Dustan Mohr. "Byrnes and Mohr are very similar, and the Rockies don't figure to keep both of them, especially if Ryan Spilborghs shows promise in his cameo appearance," the paper wrote. "Odds are, by the July 31 deadline to trade a player without having to secure waivers, either Byrnes or Mohr will be gone."

Twins: The Twins will send the Mariners a player to be named later as part of the Bret Boone deal, according to Monday's Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

How will Burnett do? It all depends on whether the kid grows some balls. Talent wise he is awesome, light years ahead of Al Leiter who just shut down the Sox. If Burnett gets his head together he could be one of the very best pitchers in all of baseball.

Does this mean the Marlins are throwing in the towel?

The Marlins can put Miguel Cabraea back at his natural position of 3B and use Josh Willingham in the OF...

As for the NL trash thing, I think Al Leiter dominating the Red Sox pretty much proves that the AL f*cking sucks
