It's interesting when you consider that similar problems befell Wilson, Pulse and Izzy. Note that the one guy who was supposed to have problems, Kazmir, has not had them.

If he undergoes surgery he could come back with all his tools or he can be like Seo who lost about 5 mph on his fastball. Hopefull, he won't need the surgery.

If he has surgery then his arm troubles will be done. If he chooses just to rehab it, then his arm problems could be a recurring thing throughout his career. I just assume have the surgery and be done w/ it

Seo got rid of his elbow problems in 1999 with that surgery but he also got rid of 5 mph on his fastball. Imagine the type of pitcher he would have been if he still threw 95 mph. If Humber loses 5 mph on his fastball he loses his prospect status and is just another minor league pitcher. The Mets better think deep before they have him under go this surgery. You only do it if you have no alternative. Surgery should always be a last option.

Just because he has the surgery does not guarantee a 5 MPH loss on his fastball. True, he will lose SOMETHING, but what will it be? Movement? Control? 2 MPH? Surgery will save his career. It is either that or shut him down for the rest of this year

humber is a pure power pitcher though, losing his fastball will be devestating.

i am with gate, you need to exercise every option before surgery

Its either take the 3 MPH cut on the fastball or risk having him have lingering arm troubles for the rest of his career

Pitchers used to gut out their entire career and put up with the pain. Now if they wake in the middle of the night and break wind that doesn't smell just right the opt for reconstructive surgery.

you dont know what you're talking about.

In all walks of life, surgery is a last option, the effects in any case are too unpredictable

How the f*ck would you know if his arm isnt right for surgery? Have you examined it? Are you a certified orthopedist? If a few doctors say Humber needs surgery then he needs surgery

None of us said his arm wasn't right for surgery. We just said that he should get as many opinions from leading orthopedists as possible. A lot of bad things happen during surgery and generally at hospitals. Generally surgery should not be done unless it is absolutely necessary. Of course Humber is not like you and me and the Mets will get him the best care possible. But you know what? Sh*t happens. Surgery is not a casual thing and should never be taken lightly. Sometimes the simplest surgery has repercussions that are tragic. My doctor once told me that surgeons make a living by cutting and that will always be their diagnosis. You’re playing with Humber’s career here. There is no way to know what the outcome will be until the surgery is done. So make sure it is absolutely necessary.

Surgery should always be the last option, but it should be pointed out that some pitchers have actually been known to GAIN a couple mph on their fastballs after Tommy John Surgery. Too many TJ Surgeries are actually being done as an elective and precautionary procedures, especially in teens and pre-teens. There was a segment about young kids and Tommy John Surgery on Real Sports recently.

That happens down here a lot. Originally TJ Surgery was designed to give aging pitchers a couple extra years on their careers, now your seeing HS Kids having it, it is ridiculous

According to the Mets Pre-Game Report, Philip Humber underwent Tommy John surgery today.

Okay, he will be out a year and then it takes a year to build up arm strength. In two years the Mets will see if they have a prospect or not. If they still do don't expect him up here for at least 4 years.

4 years? Your crazy. He will be throwing again by July, which means he will be in AAA by 2007 and up my mid-2007. Everything just gets pushed back a year, surgery was the best option for Humber

Shut the f*ck up, the last thing we need for you to do is come on a thread in the Mets forum where we are all having a discussion on a Met prospect and then have your drunk self come on in and then try to diss me. Your pathetic, so just leave and go back the OT and NFL forums

why is that the last thing you need sonny?

Humber had surgery, its not the end of the world. And yeah it will probably be '07 before he gets to AAA. If they have a brain they'll let him spend 6 weeks in AA to let him work his way back.

And go get laid or go get drunk or go get a lap dance. Do something.

Youre getting almost as bad as Ray

I said the last thing this Forum needs is for you to come into it and spam it with worthless posts, so just leave!

I supported having Humber getting surgery in the first place...I said TJ surgery was made to give aging pitchers a couple extra years on there careers because it was (i.e. Tommy John) so f*ck off you cocksucking drunk

Benson had surgery in 2001. Even last year the Mets had to delay a start because he had not built back his complete arm strength. Last night he hit 95mph on the radar gun. That is the hardest he has thrown since becoming a Met. It takes that long to build back the arm strength.
