Marlins and Leiter are on the outs

Al Leiter's return engagement with the Marlins could be nearing an end.

According to two baseball sources, the Marlins are giving strong consideration to cutting ties with the veteran left-hander. In the most likely scenario, he would be designated for assignment, which would give the team 10 days to trade or release the 158-game winner.

"That could happen soon," said a National League source.

Leiter is tentatively scheduled to start Monday in Arizona, but Marlins manager Jack McKeon has refused to commit to a starter for that game. Double-A lefty Jason Vargas could take Leiter's turn instead after going 7-4 with 118 strikeouts in 108 innings at three levels this season.

Leaving Leiter in the bullpen isn't a palatable option because of his unfamiliarity with the role and the fact he requires extra time to warm up. He has generated no trade interest this summer.

Nope. He's near the end, he's lost velocity (noticed it last season), and he can't throw strikes. Plus he's been in the NL all these years. His 6.64 ERA (in a national park they call a stadium) is atleast an 8.50 in the Fellaz League.

Why not, as a 5th starter for now being that you can't count on Brown or Wright, I say go for it!

Why not? Cuz he's sucking.....in the NL. You know what a 6.64 National League ERA translate to over here? He wouldn't be counted on for much, but he wouldn't contribute and it would be a waste.

We need to pick up Leiter, let him stay a month in Tampa working with Connors and then bring him to the bigs. With Wang done, we need to make moves like this.
