Streak on the line for hobbled Hideki
June 14
New York Daily News: There will be a little extra drama when the lineup card is posted on the clubhouse door tonight at the Stadium since everyone will be looking for Hideki Matsui's name.
The Yankees outfielder badly rolled his right ankle chasing Jim Edmonds' double to right in the seventh inning of Sunday's loss in St. Louis and could be held out of the series opener with the Pirates. If Matsui doesn't play, his consecutive-games played streak would end at 1,637.
Initial X-rays on the ankle were negative, and Matsui had an MRI exam at the Stadium yesterday, which also came back clean. Matsui received treatment and will be evaluated again today before a decision is made on whether he'll play.
Joe Torre has respected Matsui's desire to continue the streak (Matsui did not start on Wednesday in Milwaukee but pinch-hit to keep it going), but said that was not a priority in determining whether Matsui can play since his health is the most important issue.
Even his teammates follow the streak. When Tino Martinez was ejected (along with Torre) from the game against the Brewers, he went to Torre in the manager's office to ask if bench coach Joe Girardi would be sure to get Matsui in the game; Torre said several other players inquired about that, too.

Seat Is Reserved For Boss
June 14
New York Post: A very disappointed George Steinbrenner is leaving the cover provided by Tampa for New York, but don't expect him to talk about the Yankees' struggles.
According to the buzz yesterday at Yankee Stadium, The Boss is likely to arrive tonight and has more on his mind than the slumping Yankees, even though he is frustrated at the 30-32 ledger his club takes into tonight's game against the Pirates.
With the Yankees close to formally announcing their new stadium — which could come today or tomorrow — Steinbrenner is expected to be on hand for the press conference. However, whenever it is held, The Boss will only answer questions related to the stadium, slated to be ready for Opening Day, 2009.
As for Steinbrenner sending messages to his underachieving club via coach firings, The Boss is staying quiet. How long that lasts is the biggest question in the Yankees' universe.

Yankees Must Make A Stand
June 14
New York Post: With the next 13 games at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees' season hangs in the balance as they welcome the Pirates, Cubs, Devil Rays and Mets.
By June 26 we will know if the Yankees harbor postseason thoughts or prepare themselves for three months of agony and abuse from their front-running fans.
Who says so?
Joe Torre and Alex Rodriguez.
No longer can the Yankees talk about playing well after losses. It's time to show the baseball universe George Steinbrenner's club has what it takes inside to erase 10 weeks of miserable performances that have left many wondering when The Boss will start swinging the axe.
"It depends on what the other teams do. Make or break? They let us stay in the race by losing their share of games," Torre said leaving Yogi Berra's charity golf tournament in West Orange yesterday. "We are still at arm's length of them and we have to put something together. So it is make or break.
"It's important for us. We are home for two weeks. We thought going on the road, playing in the same time zones and all that stuff would work to our advantage but we couldn't put anything together."
The Yankees limped home with a 3-9 ledger.

Ex-Yanks tell Joe it's par for course
June 14
New York Daily News: On the morning after he returned home from a brutal road trip, the last thing Joe Torre wanted to see were the two notebooks and two cameras waiting for him when he stepped on to the grounds of the Montclair (N.J.) Golf Club yesterday.
But then, beyond that small gathering, dozens of pats on the back and encouraging words also were waiting.
The occasion was the annual Yogi Berra Museum Celebrity Golf Classic. And the support flowed from the former Yankees who came to play and help raise money for charity, but couldn't tee off without checking on the current skipper.
Berra, in fact, intercepted Torre before reporters could begin their interrogation.
"Yogi is my support," Torre said. "He calls me on the road. And if there was ever a champ on an ongoing basis, it's Yogi and Whitey Ford and all these guys.

Bombers move on own plan as N.Y. turns two
June 14
New York Daily News: The Yankees are a practical bunch, so the annoyance they had about the Mets' new stadium announcement Sunday soon gave way to understanding.
"It's something they had to do," one Yankee source said.
This was to be the Yankees' week to unveil their new plan - first reported by the Daily News in April - but team officials realized that the rush to repair the damaged 2012 Olympics bid meant the Mets and the city had to move quickly.
They did note, however, that the city appears to have taken the "memorandum of understanding" forged between the city, state and Yankees, and just applied it to the Mets. The Yankees will go ahead with their announcement tomorrow afternoon at the Stadium.
Sources said Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki called Yankee president Randy Levine over the weekend to inform him about the developing plans, and Levine told them he just wanted to make sure the Mets did not end up with a better deal, a source close to all parties said.
"(The Yankees) just wanted to make sure that if there was no public money going into the Bronx, then there's no public money going into Queens," the source said.

Stats Geek: Pirates gaining some ground on Yankees
June 14
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Are the Pirates better than the Yankees? That this question can even be asked is astonishing. Though this morning's standings are only a snapshot in a season with 100 games to go, let's treat the question as if it were open.

Bucs will be tested by venues as well as by Yankees and Sox
June 14
Pittsburgh Tribune: Technically, tonight's game at Yankee Stadium is just another of 162, but Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson knows better."

I don't mind the idea of a new stadium. I'd prefer they just stop playing there for a few years while they renovate it, but they need something new, IMO.
