Before batting practice, Cashman conferred with Womack in the players' lounge. After the game, they spoke at Womack's locker. Cashman rarely travels with the team, and he said he used this trip to meet individually with several players. Cashman said that neither Womack nor his agent had requested a trade. Still, Womack seems unhappy with his role. And with his relatively inexpensive contract and his past success in the National League, he is one of the few players the Yankees could be able to trade. Speaking generally, Cashman said, "I've got a lot of things going on behind the scenes." Cashman said that Womack initiated the second meeting. When asked about it, Womack said: "Just a conversation. Everything's fine." Asked if he was happy with his role, Womack said, "It's not about me personally, it's about the team." San Diego could be a landing spot for Womack if the Yankees decided to trade him, because Padres second baseman Mark Loretta has a torn ligament in his left thumb. But the Padres have said they cannot add to their payroll. With the Cardinals last season, Womack was an everyday player who started at second base and hit leadoff. On the Yankees, he is none of those things, and after playing the last six weeks in left field, he may be on the move again. Manager Joe Torre said he was intrigued by the idea of having Womack and Bernie Williams alternate in center field, which would allow Hideki Matsui to play left field every day. "I told him I'd like to see him take some fly balls in center field," Torre said, referring to Womack. "I think he's capable of playing center field because of his ability to run the ball down. We'll see what it looks like. I may do that when we get home." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yankees' trip hits dead end June 13 New York Daily News: Alex Rodriguez made the last out of the game, the last out of this wretched road trip for the Yankees, and jogged back to the dugout through a sea of celebrating Cardinals. As he reached the top step, A-Rod stopped and looked up at the scoreboard, staring for a few moments before heading into the tunnel to the clubhouse. It was as though he couldn't believe what he was seeing. But that is what this entire two-week, four-city marathon was for the Bombers, who finally flew home last night after losing again, 5-3, before a sellout crowd of 50,372 at Busch Stadium. "It feels like we've been on the road for a month," Rodriguez said wearily. "And we stunk it up." No one could argue. The Yankees went 3-9 on this "terrible" trip, as Joe Torre succinctly put it, and have dropped 11 of their last 14. They played better the past two days, but suffered yesterday when their bullpen faltered and their hitters - yet again - came up small when it mattered most. Tanyon Sturtze gave up a two-run home run to pinch-hitter Scott Seabol (an 88th-round Yankees draft pick in 1996 who had just 36 career big league at-bats) in the seventh inning that turned a 2-1 Bombers lead into a 3-2 deficit. Mike Stanton allowed a two-run double to Jim Edmonds four batters later that gave the Cards plenty of cushion, particularly since the Yanks' lineup has been so weak. The Bombers left 89 runners on base over the past 12 games, including nine yesterday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matsui's fall could KO streak June 13 New York Daily News: Hideki Matsui turned 31 years old yesterday. A throbbing ankle and a series of X-rays probably wasn't the sort of celebration he had in mind. The Yankees' durable outfielder suffered a badly twisted right ankle in the seventh inning of yesterday's 5-3 loss to the Cardinals and, depending on how it feels today and tomorrow, his consecutive-games played streak could come to an abrupt end. "The last thing we have to worry about now is his streak," Joe Torre said, "because we're talking about somebody's health here." It appeared as though Matsui avoided any serious injury; he was able to walk gingerly in the moments after the game and preliminary X-rays were negative, though more extensive tests are planned for today. But Matsui clearly was in pain. He hurt himself chasing Jim Edmonds' two-run double, falling to the ground when he tried to stop suddenly, his feet sliding out from under him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return trip to House That Ruth Built June 13 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jason Bay and Mitch Mansfield have different orbits in baseball's solar system, but they shared the same reaction when it was determined that the Pirates would be playing in Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. "I started looking forward to it as soon as the schedule came out. Wow," said Bay, the Pirates' left fielder. His father is a big Red Sox fan, so Bay has made plans to bring family and friends along for the historic trip this week. Mansfield, who has season tickets to Pirates games, has arranged a trip with his father, son and seven other fans to sandwich visits to New York and Boston in between stops at a field of dreams called Doubleday Farms near Harrisburg and the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. "As soon as we saw the Pirates were playing in those two places, I called my friends and said, 'Let's do this trip.' I just want to sit in the seats in both places and take it all in," said Mansfield, a Penn Hills resident who had T-shirts made proclaiming this the Ultimate Baseball Trip 2005. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for June 13: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- vote for our site. Manager Joe Torre said he was intrigued by the idea of having Womack and Bernie Williams alternate in center field, which would allow Hideki Matsui to play left field every day. NY Times :please: How about we leave Bernie 100% out of CF. :annoyed: He's terrible in CF. :annoyed: Start Womack in CF and have Bernie alternate with Sierra at DH with Bernie getting a rare start as a corner OFer to rest a player. Then we make Giambi sweat it out on the bench with ZERO playing time until he begs to get out of his contract at a substantial discount. Mooohahahahahaha  |

I'd like to move Womack. He's offering nothing. He gets his stolen bases in bunches, then does nothing for weeks, and he's clearly not a leftfielder. |

Bernie is still productive. We obviously don't play as well with Giambi in the lineup. I'd like to see our record with Giambi starting over Bernie. |

Sure there is. Womack would definitely be worse than Bernie out there. The only advantage he'd have is his arm. Womack would look like a guy being chased by bees as he tried to run down fly balls in CF. Womack either has to go or should be on the bench as the utility guy/pinch runner. |

But more important. You don't just put a guy in Center Field because he can't handle the way the ball comes off the bat. |

I think you forgot about Bernie's bad knees. Womack is much faster than him. I would say that is an advantage after watching Bernie repeatedly jog after routine fly balls that go by him to the wall... :smirk: (oh and by the way, Joe and other Yankee management seem to agree with me that it's worth a try :peace: ) |

Obviously Womack is faster than Bernie. I'm not talking about speed. I am talking about knowing how to run routes to flyballs. Womack doesn't have those instincts. There is just no way Womack is a better outfielder than Bernie, even with Bernie's decreased speed. That said, I also don't want Bernie playing in LF after not having played there since his rookie season. Bernie should either DH or play CF the rest of the way. I don't like experimenting this far into the season. As for it being discussed by the Yankees and that validating your comments, that doesn't mean it's a good idea. He's out there because Cano was ready to play and this is a flawed roster thanks to Giambi taking up DH at bats, Bernie slipping defensively (still better to have him in CF than not playing at all) and not being able to DH more often because of Giambi, and Sierra being an all or nothing DH/pinch hitter. Womack should either be an infielder or a bench player. He doesn't provide enough offense to put up with in LF or CF and it's not like he's good enough out there to justify him being in there for D. |

Sad state of affairs that we're even thinking about Tony Womack being an every day centerfielder for this team. I want him traded, I would like to think he still has some value in this league but other than maybe San Diego with Lorretta out awhile I don't see any teams in contention needing a 2B. |

When I read that Alex Sanchez was released today I found myself wondering if i'd prefer him over Womack........Honestly, I think i take Sanchez(defence or no defence), but just the fact that I considered it tells you something about Womack. This from a guy who was on the Womack bandwagon when we signed him. |
