In his column Shaun Powell of Newsday discusses the up coming Yankees/Mets series.: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/ny-...eball-headlines One section of it that I thought was interesting was the following: “There's a slugger who was once feared throughout baseball just a few years ago because he pounded fastballs into powder. Now he's an aging, fading former star who's barely hitting above .200, is a liability in the field and making $15 million for who he used to be. And his name isn't Giambi. Mike Piazza is getting a pass in this town because he took the Mets from the pits to the World Series, made a strong Hall of Fame case for himself during his time in New York, became the face of the franchise, did good community work and is a swell guy. Maybe that's why no one will admit he's having a tougher time than Giambi. It's all about importance to the club. The Yankees don't depend on Giambi at first base the way the Mets lean on Piazza to catch. Nor is Giambi being penciled into a prime spot in the batting order, the way Piazza is daily with the Mets. As a result of Piazza's weak arm, opposing runners are getting to second base faster than Tara Reid's boyfriends. And because their No.5 hitter isn't hitting his weight, the Mets aren't getting premium production at that spot. At least the Yankees can cover for Giambi with Tino Martinez in the midst of the most torrid home-run stretch of anyone in the Joe Torre era, plus there's Bernie Williams and soon Ruben Sierra to DH. If push comes to shove, the Yankees can stash Giambi on the bench. Try seeing the Mets do that with Piazza” Which brings me to my point. The Mets have series with Oakland, Seattle and the Yankees where they use the DH. In the past they would move Piazza to the DH and catch the backup. But do you really want DiFelice in the lineup. We don’t have that many automatic outs that we can give away without it affecting the club. My idea is to keep Pizza catching and bring up Diaz and use him as the DH. Piazza and DiFelice can share the catching. Neither of those guys can hit anymore (although DiFelice never could hit) so the Mets need Diaz’s bat in the lineup. Unless Willie can convince his buddy Donnie baseball to come over and do for Piazza what he did for Tino the spot would be perfect for Diaz. |

I really do wish we hadn't given up Wilson for nothing. I wouldn't mind him catching in the interleague series'. He was good in short doses and we could have just pulled Piazza out altogether. He's not here so we have to do something different. I do like the idea of hitting Diaz at DH. As bad as Piazza is, I'd still take him over DeFelice. This is the reason I wanted the Mets to trade Piazza in the offseason if they had the chance. He makes a lot of money to do absolutely nothing for the club. His defensive abilities, as poor as they were to begin with, have just gotten worse. And his maximum offensive capabilities are .250 22-23 HRs, 70 RBIs. Not worth the money at all. |

But if the Mets are a contender those 9 games could mean something. I think they should have kept Diaz until after the inter-league games and found somebody else to send down or release. |

I used to think you had a certain number of options on a player before they run out, but it turns out you have a certain number of years of using options once you start using them. I am not sure if it is 2-3 yrs, but in those years, they can be sent up and down non-stop. The main rule that avoids them from being moved up and down every other day is that once you option them back down to the minors, they have to stay down there for 10 days, unless there's an injury on the MLB roster, at which point they can be called up before the 10 day waiting period. |

Silliness. Wilson is a career backup who can fill in short doses. I was assuming the Mets would keep Phillips who could have potentially turned it around or sign a guy like Varitek to replace Piazza. When the Mets decided to keep Piazza behind the plate, then I didn't have a problem with trading Phillips because we had way too many catchers on the books. Phillips isn't all that good defensively and he wasn't hitting, so it wasn't a big deal IMO. The Wilson deal I'll never get. If Anderson Hernandez is the most we could have gotten for him, then we should have just held on to Wilson. Wilson can throw out runners easily. That would have helped immensely. I'll agree that Piazza deserves a free pass, but the Mets don't deserve one for continuing to rely on him as a major part of the team. |

i wouldve loved having wilson as our number 8 hitter, he is not that bad a hitter. I like phillips as well, he had a sophmore slump and wasnt hitting the other way but players usually get over those. |

Wilson had chances to prove he could be an everyday player, but proved inadequate. He's a good backup/defensive replacement who I rate higher than Castro, nothing more. I refuse to blame Minaya for the Phillips deal. Heilman and Seo had bad STs, so we needed another pitcher. Ishii has had good first halfs each of the last few years and Trax was expected to be out half the season. It wasn't a bad idea at all considering Phillips' trade value. The Wilson deal I simply didn't understand at the time and I still don't now. |

I believe that because of Piazza’s history with the Mets he deserves more then a free pass. You have to accept that he is past his prime and you can’t get down on him for getting older. However, the Mets knew this and they should have planned for the fact the Piazza couldn’t get it done offensively anymore. Instead they pranced merrily about with their heads up their a*s. And if you don’t believe that consider that they continued to bat him 4th and now 5th. I don’t think the Yankee fans should bash Bernie because he is getting older. Just use him properly and the same holds true for Piazza. And that is not being negative. But being a jackass is saying that Piazza with hit .340 with 4ohrs and 120rbis. Accept the fact that he may do .240, 20hr and 60 rbis. |
