Yankees News For April 11 --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for April 11: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- Addled Pavano and Shaky Yankees Head to Boston April 11 New York Times: When Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano returned from the hospital yesterday afternoon, still wearing his pinstriped baseball pants, no one could have been entirely sure if he had regained his faculties. There was, however, little question he had rediscovered his priorities. He was too woozy to talk with reporters. He was too wobbly to even think about throwing a baseball. And yet he slowly packed a bag at his locker in the Yankees' clubhouse, slipped on a suit and headed out with the rest of his teammates to a plane bound for Boston. Never mind that Pavano took a line drive off his head in the third inning of a 7-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, was rushed to the hospital for a neurological exam and a C.T. scan, and was found to have a mild concussion. No doctor's note could have excused an absence from Fenway Park today. Whether the Yankees are watching from the visiting dugout on the third-base line or listening from the visiting clubhouse in the park's concourse, they are going to have to endure a pregame ceremony today that has been in the works for 86 years - and relive a humiliation that has been continuing for nearly six months. As Boston raises its first World Series championship banner since 1918, Pavano probably will not be the only one with ringing in his ears. And as the Red Sox receive their championship rings, the diamond-encrusted emblems that players lord over one another, Alex Rodriguez will be reminded once again that his hands remain bare. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Liner drills Pavano as O's batter Bombers April 11 New York Daily News: The Yankees fittingly will be on hand when the Red Sox get their championship rings today. And Carl Pavano will be among them, even if his head is still ringing from yesterday. Pavano accompanied the Yankees to Boston last night for the banner-raising party 86 years in the making today at Fenway. But not before he spent much of yesterday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital after he was knocked out of the game - but not knocked out - by a line drive off the side of his head by Melvin Mora in the third inning. Pavano, whose neurological exams and a CAT scan came back negative, suffered what the team said was a mild concussion. He later returned to the Stadium and was cleared by Dr. Stuart Hershon to travel with the team. "It's just the danger of being so close to the hitter. It looked like he turned his head at just the right time," Joe Torre said. "I think everyone was concerned, obviously, when Pavano was hit. But the nature of the game is you've got to keep playing." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trotting Jorge gets in trouble April 11 New York Daily News: Joe Torre didn't need to say anything to Jorge Posada about possibly costing the Yankees a big inning when he trotted and admired a potential home run during yesterday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. Posada's fly ball in the fifth inning hit the wall in right-center, but the Yanks' catcher admittedly didn't run out what resulted in a long single. He was erased on a run-scoring double play ball off the bat of Bubba Crosby one batter later, in an inning in which the Yanks scored just once despite getting four of their six hits against Baltimore starter Rodrigo Lopez. "There's no excuses, I've gotta be at second base on that," Posada said. "I told Joe I know I made a mistake and I'm pretty sure it will never happen again." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jorge's Singular Gaffe April 11 New York Post: Sometimes getting a hit isn't a good thing. Or at least it isn't as good as it should be. Jorge Posada singled in the fifth inning of the Yankees' 7-2 loss to Baltimore yesterday, but his dogging it out of the box on what he mistook for a home run contributed to the Bombers' loss. And Posada knew it as soon as it happened, going right to Joe Torre and telling him as much. "As a hitter, and as a baserunner, when you make a mistake, you understand," Posada said. "I've got to be on second base. There's no excuse." After a discussion with Posada in the dugout, Torre agreed. "Unfortunately he 'thought it was a home run'," Torre said. "He needs to be at second base on that. You just can't take anything for granted. He knew. Before I said it to him, he knew. He came in and told me." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giambi's gaffe really hurts April 11 New York Daily News: Before the Yankees played the Orioles at the Stadium yesterday, Joe Torre said he plans on splitting time at first base between Jason Giambi and Tino Martinez. Though Martinez is considered one of the better fielding first basemen in the American League, Torre said he has no problem using Giambi in the field. The only thing Giambi lacks, Torre said, is range and an accurate throwing arm. "He has good hands," Torre said. "He can catch the ball." A couple of hours later, Giambi's poor fielding proved costly in the Yankees' 7-2 loss to Baltimore. With the Yankees trailing 1-0 in the third, Orioles leadoff hitter Brian Roberts laid down a bunt toward first. Giambi charged the ball, fielded it and turned to flip it toward first, where second baseman Tony Womack was covering. Though the play would have been close, Roberts could have been called out had Giambi's toss been accurate, but it sailed past Womack. Things then got uglier. The next hitter, Melvin Mora, hit a popup down the first base line that Giambi camped under in foul territory. Giambi said he looked away for a moment to try to locate the wall. "As soon as I looked up I looked right into the sun and I lost (the ball)," Giambi said, "and I couldn't get it back." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yanks Probably Won't Watch Champions' Ring Ceremony April 11 New York Post: Diamonds are forever, and this afternoon the Red Sox get the rings that prove their rivalry with the Yankees has been altered for eternity. The moment Yankee fans have dreaded for months is here. Most of the visiting players say they don't care about the ring ceremony honoring Boston's "idiots" as world champions, which is scheduled to begin around 2:15 p.m. Most of them say they probably won't watch it, because they'll be going through their final preparations for the 3 p.m. game. Nevertheless, the Sox will be honored with World Series rings at Fenway Park this afternoon - and the Bombers and their supporters will hear about it for at least the next 86 years. "They have the right to do whatever they want," Alex Rodriguez said yesterday. "They're world champs." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for April 11: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- |
