I know its early, but does it bother you that he's been throwing in the low 90s on the fastball? Its only his second start (but there is Spring Training) and its not 80+ degrees yet, but we've seen it enough times with other players. He hits 98 mph on his last pitch of a perfect game, comes here and he's throwing 92 on the first pitch. Paranoid, pessimist, whatever - I'm concerned. Randy Johnson minus 5 mph can still be damn good, but that's not "Randy Johnson".

What did I tell you? I knew we should have traded for Johan instead. :no1:

i dunno how velocity works with pitchers starting the season, quite honestly. if they are supposed to be throwing at full strength right now, i'd be very concerned. the real randy johnson gets it regularly in the mid 90s and is racking up ks. rj isn't even striking out the os.

This is not good. I'll try not to overreact, but this bothers me a lot. 4 k's in 6 ip, 4 ER.... cause for concern. I don't care if it's April 9th and only the 5th game of the year. RJ needs to get it together.

With his track record, RJ gets some slack. But he isn't above getting bashed if he doesn't start looking like he did in Az.

I know its early, but isn't Spring Training the time when you're supposed to scrub the rust off and get loose? Everybody else is at normal velocity right now. Even Mussina (Sissy L) was throwing as hard as he usually does. What's up? Could it be another "Pinstripes sucks 10% out of you" situation?

M23, what do you think? I know you have more than just a shot at 03. You have to atleast be concerned by this.

Does anyone in the New York media have the insight or balls to ask him why he's throwing 4-6 mph less than he was as recently as 8 months ago? <- I already know the answer to that. It'll only be brought up if he's been struggling for 5 conseuctive starts and they feel justified and want to pile on. :smirk:

Somebody would ask him about the velocity and he will break their microphone or something. I would laugh my ass off if that happened.

RJ just said on the post-game that he's disappointed with his velocity, said his mechanics were messed up today.

He'll be fine.

Some of his fastballs were 96, 97 against the Sox, lets' not get nuts over 1 start!

He hit 95 a few times against Boston but he wasn't doing it consistently. He was at 92-93 for most of the game.

And Mel couldn't fix it? Shocking.
