while i think mattingly23 makes some good points, i really think strider makes more good points. i'm sorry, but booing not only serves as a means to express your displeasure, which is every fans right, it serves as a measure to let the players know "what have you done for me lately." personally, if im a player and i'm getting my balls licked for the past and am getting a permanent pass, what's my motivation? i got my millions, i got my rings, i got my world series mvp. sure, rivera is probably ticked as hell about these blown saves, but i think it also serves as an extra motivator to know that if you can't right yourself against boston, the fans are going to boo you til your head explodes.
And that's how New York fans are. It's definitely "what have you done for me lately".
Yup...and Yankee fans, especially those 18-25 are spoiled rotten.
does booing someone that screws up over and over and over against boston really make that person a spoiled fan? perhaps, they just want to see rivera pitch like he does against other teams. i'm sure all of us would rather he blow games against the devil rays and shut down the red sox.
And the same fans cheer Giambi, WTF

i hope those were just sympathy cheers. one more bad game out of giambi and the boos should start and never stop, unless he rights himself.

People are idiots to boo Mo after all this. His recent streak should make you happy we had a dominant closer for so long, but apparently, most of you are ignorant, unhappy bitches.
And the BOOS are NOT going to help a person that has NEVER had to dealt with them before. IDIOTS!

i have no empirical data, but i would believe that getting booed is better for a person than constantly being excused for their poor play.

not at all, just an example of the MAJOR gap between an undercooked burger and your favorite sports team emotionally..you have reason to take it personal Ray, I would too.

I agree with him...But I f*ckin hate him since he f*ckin hates the Jets so bad.
Steve Serby is the Jets guy anyway.
Vaccaro also writes on the Jets and he isn't the greatest guy, Serby is worse, but Vacaroo is also a dickwad towards the Jets.

I know there's the whole school of thought of "I paid for my tickets and these guys are getting paid millions, so I will boo if I want to." Yes, everyone has a right to boo whoever they want. If guys who are overpaid and have never done anything to help the Yankees win titles struggle like Giambi, Brown, etc., fine, boo them. I'm not a big booer, but I wouldn't have a problem with those guys being booed, although I did yell at everyone in my section who booed Giambi at the home opener in 2002 because it was WAY too early to treat a new player that way.
However, I have a major problem with someone like Mariano Rivera being booed. Most of those ungrateful a-holes booing probably don't even remember Rivera coming up in 1995 as a starter. Many of them are probably Yankees fans as a result of Rivera being a huge part of the team since 1996. Without Rivera, those fans, even the ones who were fans way before 1996, would have a couple of less World Championships, at the least. I don't want to hear someone like Strider come back with a, "Yeah, but he's also cost them a couple of rings." Silliness.
The run Rivera was on from 1996 to just before Game 7 of the 2001 WS, sans Game 4 of the 1997 ALDS, was truly amazing and history making. It didn't end then, just the invincibility did. Does anyone remember how Mariano Rivera did in the 2003 ALCS against Boston? Remember those 3 innings in Game 7? Actually you can even include the 1995 ALDS, which was his coming out part, in case you weren't a fan by 1995 and didn't realize it. In fact, if Buck Showalter knew what he had, the Yankees might have won that series because he could have used him over a struggling John Wetteland and starting pitcher Jack McDowell as closer. The best thing to come out of that series was that the Yankees realized they had a future star on their hands and he was immediately inserted as Wetteland's 2 inning setup man in 1996 with the idea of letting Wetteland walk at the end of the season if things worked out. Guess what? They more than worked out. 9 years later, it can be said with conviction that Mariano Rivera is the best relief pitcher of all-time and as he ages and loses his invincibility, even if it is against Boston, he still deserves the respect of Yankees fans.
Am I worried about him against Boston? Absolutely, I am. I'm terrified right now.
Was I pissed the last two days? You better believe I was.
Will I ever rip on or boo Mariano Rivera? Not a chance in hell. I would rather thank him for the great times I have enjoyed as a Yankee fan the past 10 years after a childhood and teenage years of never even making the playoffs. I'd prefer to support him for the future success I know he will still have, even if he blows a game here or there.
I feel lucky to have watched Mariano Rivera close games for my favorite teams. It's a trite saying, but I will tell my grandkids about the greatest closer of all-time someday, even if he blows another game or two against Boston.

Quit your damn whining over Rivera getting booed. The jackass is being $10 million a year to close out baseball games, yet he continually screws us over against Boston. That MORE than warrants being booed the hell out of the Stadium.

I think no player should be exempt from boos......if they deserve it at the time, then so be it. History shouldn't matter.

I'll boo my boys Sheffield and Jeter too if they deserve it. It's not like Mo is first life long Yankee to ever hear it from the fans either. Some people here are overreacting too much. :peace:

I was at the game yesterday and I could not believe what I heard. I was just looking around and said to my friend Are these people kidding me? After everything MO has done how can you boo him.
Because he sucks against Boston, that's how I can justify booing his ass to hell and back. He also refuses to make adjustments against the Sox, he needs a wake up call (as do some of you fans). What are you going to do? Cheer after he blows a game against Boston? Yeah, that "it's ok Mo, you'll get them next time" attitude really will help things. :please:

I'll do what I want, if I feel like booing a guy I'll do it. I don't pay money to see him, I pay to see the Yankees as a team and when they're close to winning, if somebody screws it up, you can be damn sure I'll be pissed off to no end about it and let that player know it.

while i think mattingly23 makes some good points, i really think strider makes more good points. i'm sorry, but booing not only serves as a means to express your displeasure, which is every fans right, it serves as a measure to let the players know "what have you done for me lately." personally, if im a player and i'm getting my balls licked for the past and am getting a permanent pass, what's my motivation? i got my millions, i got my rings, i got my world series mvp. sure, rivera is probably ticked as hell about these blown saves, but i think it also serves as an extra motivator to know that if you can't right yourself against boston, the fans are going to boo you til your head explodes.
And that's how New York fans are. It's definitely "what have you done for me lately".
Yup...and Yankee fans, especially those 18-25 are spoiled rotten.
I do agree with this too!! I became a Yankee fan in '86 watching the way Donnie Baseball played and I had to wait 10 years before the Yankees won a World Series. Do you know how many Yankee teams lost during those years? Plenty!! I was there when they won the WS back in '96 and it was worth the wait. If I could wait at least 10 years to see a championship then this generation's Yankee fans can wait at least 10 years or more to see one as well!!
The "what you have done for me lately" mentality that fans have towards Mo is pathetic but that's way most fans are these days. They are very fickle. I use to boo the Yankees when they were horrible in the late 80's and early 90's. This is a time where you a valid reason to BOO the Yankees. If you go to a game and Mo pitches poorly like he did and you want to boo him then you could boo him, but I wouldn't. Booing doesn't really help Mo, but for some players it does. I was at Tuesday's game for Pavano's debut and when Mo blew the lead some fans around me wanted him traded!! :please: Now that to me is assinine!! We are NOT replacing Rivera anytime soon so why say such a comment? This is when I think Yankee fans are spoiled!! We're NOT getting Lidge, Gagne, or K-Rod anytime soon so we're just going to have to pull through for Mo!! This mentality also is the way women think as well, but that's a whole other topic for another day!!

Part of the problem is what Mo has done in the past. Because of his success we've come to expect a close game in the 9th to be closed out. This recent struggle to me suprises and scares me more than it makes me angry.
The Sports Guy on ESPN.com has mentioned a "grace period" he's giving the Sox, ie a length you give someone a pass for. Its not indefinite but it leaves a little room for error. This is what I think should happen for Rivera.
If it was against any other team this would've been a non-issue. Playing 52 games against the Sox in the past 2 years certainly hasn't helped him get over this Boston-phobia. But because of what Rivera has done in the past, I'm going to say that on April 6th, game 3 of the season, he doesn't deserve to get boo'ed. If this continues the situation could arise again, but for now I would like to see Yankee fans show the class that the team does and refrain from boo'ing. All I know is Mattingly never got boo'ed...
