Yankees News For April 7 --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for April 7: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- Bombers face Mo problems April 7 New York Daily News: This was a sight not often seen at Yankee Stadium, followed by a sound not often heard: Joe Torre walking slowly to the mound to take the ball from Mariano Rivera, and Rivera trudging back to the dugout, even slower than Torre, while scattered boos and jeers rained from above. In one sense, the scene was surreal for the Yankees; Rivera has been their star closer for so long, the mere thought that any fans would turn on him was, in Torre's words, "inexcusable." But it was also telling. On a far less important stage and in far less meaningful circumstances than last fall's ALCS, Rivera failed again on back-to-back days against Boston. On Tuesday it was quick and virtually painless - a game-tying home run in the ninth by Jason Varitek, followed by Derek Jeter's walk-off blast in the bottom of the inning to save the day - but yesterday was agony, a 38-pitch, three-walk, one-big-error-by-Alex-Rodriguez devastation that left the Bombers stunned by a 7-3 defeat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bronx Cheer Back At Ya April 7 New York Post: SHAME on you, if you were a member of the leather-lunged brigade of blowhards who stood up at Yankee Stadium yesterday, just as the big Armitron clock clicked to 4:13 p.m., and committed one of the most despicable acts of baseball ingratitude we've seen around here in a long, long time. You booed Mariano Rivera? You really booed Mariano Rivera? Yeah. Damn right. Shame on you. "After everything he's done for this team in this ballpark," Mel Stottlemyre fumed, "I was shocked." "Maybe," Mike Mussina mused, "it was just a case of temporary insanity." "There are always about 20,000 Red Sox fans here when we play them," Mariano Rivera said, a half-smile on his face. "Maybe it was only Sox fans who were booing." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stop by and talk about all the news at TheYankeesBoard.com forum. A-Rod flubs it with greatest of E's April 7 New York Daily News: Alex Rodriguez's first home run of the season was a monster, the kind of faraway flight that usually comes with two movies, maybe even a second bag of peanuts. But nobody wanted to hear about A-Rod's sweet swing yesterday, not after his ninth-inning bobble and re-bobble cost the Yankees a game, and tore another stripe off Mariano Rivera's sleeve. The Yankees were in front, 3-2, two outs away from sweeping the Red Sox - another in the series of photo finishes between these clubs - when Manny Ramirez sent a ground ball directly at the third baseman. Manny's a dangerous hitter, a one-man powerhouse, but speed is nothing he brings to the party. So his one-out grounder to the left side was a money-back guaranteed double play. Game over. The Yankees win. And the man warbles, "Thaaaaaaaaah Yankees win ..." Not this time, John. "I had a feeling the ball was coming my way," A-Rod was saying later. "I just screwed it up." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heads up! Jeter plunked April 7 New York Daily News: The psyche of Mariano Rivera was hardly the Yankees' only concern after yesterday's stunning loss to the Red Sox. The ringing in Derek Jeter's ears was an issue as well. Jeter left the game after the eighth inning, during which he was hit by a pitch that seemed to graze his shoulder before hitting his helmet. He initially stayed in the game, but he later went to Columbia Medical Center for a precautionary CT scan. It appeared he avoided significant injury. Jeter was listed as day-to-day, as the Yankees said the test revealed "normal activity." There was nothing normal about the end of yesterday's game, and not just because Rivera blew another save against Boston in a 7-3 Yankees loss. Jeter is almost always in the game until the last out is made and in the clubhouse when the media arrives afterward. Not yesterday, however, after getting struck by reliever Mike Timlin's first pitch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Timlin offers inside take on inside pitch April 7 Boston Globe: "I've known Jeter for a long time," said Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin. "I never played with him, but he's a class guy. He knows I don't head hunt. Obviously, I didn't do it on purpose." Timlin was talking about the eighth-inning pitch that put the Yankees shortstop in the hospital yesterday afternoon, a fastball that got away and struck Jeter in the left shoulder and deflected off the left ear flap of his helmet, knocking it off his head. I mouthed the words, `Are you OK?' " Timlin said. "He said, `Yeah, I'm all right.' " Jeter remained in the game until the end of the inning, when he was replaced by Rey Sanchez. A CAT scan at the hospital was negative, a Yankee official said after the game. During the three-game series, Jason Giambi was hit by pitches three times and Jeter twice. No Sox players were hit, as the Yankees apparently eschewed retaliation. "They'd be upset if they thought we were trying to hit them," Timlin said. "We hit Giambi, but the book on him is to pitch him high and tight, and his swing is better than it has been in a long time. "You can't survive if you don't pitch inside. I'm sorry. That's part of the game. If you try not to demand the inside of the plate, you're going to die. Other guys may not say that verbally, but that's just the way it is." Timlin, who said his pitches had too much movement yesterday, was concerned to see Jeter go down. "I'm a human being," he said. "I was concerned. But I pitch inside. I pitch hard inside. I've hit guys in the knees, the ribs. But once you get above the shoulder, that's the danger zone." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bosox: We don't own Mo April 7 New York Daily News: The Red Sox burned Mariano Rivera again yesterday, and while they generally want to approach their success against the Yankee closer as an unexplained phenomenon - think Bigfoot or UFOs - there is one thing the Sox are positive about: They are not Mo's Daddy. "Yeah, right," Sox first baseman Kevin Millar said yesterday, his voice dripping with sarcasm at a reference to former teammate Pedro Martinez's famed quote about Martinez's failures against the Yanks. "There's no rhyme or reason," Millar added. "I don't think there's an answer. I'm not Mariano, so ask him. I know I go up there and battle him every time. It's not like we like to see him come in. As a hitter, it's not a comfortable at-bat." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tino's Homer Softens Defeat April 7 New York Post: If there were a silver lining in the dark cloud that hung over the Stadium yesterday, an afternoon that included a bean ball, blown save and a Boston victory, it was Tino Martinez. On an afternoon when the Bombers lost Derek Jeter to a Mike Timlin pitch while Mariano Rivera blew a fourth straight save (second in two days) against the enemy Red Sox, Martinez gave his loyal legions one of the few bright moments of a 7-3 loss. "Hopefully, he's all right," Martinez said of Jeter, who was taken to a hospital for precautionary tests. "He was a little woozy after he came back to the dugout. "I saw him in the dugout," Martinez added. "He said he was a little dizzy, but he looked fine." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brown MRI OK April 7 New York Daily News: Kevin Brown had an MRI on his balky back yesterday and the results were normal, the Yankees said, indicating there is no structural damage. That's good news for the Bombers, though Brown said his threshold for pain has had to increase since his latest flare-up, because there simply won't be a time when he's not in some kind of discomfort. "Status quo is good for me, I guess," he said. "When it's something chronic like this, there's always something that hurts. The question is whether I can pitch with it or not." The Yanks would like him to make his debut April 17 against Baltimore, which is the day he's scheduled to come off the disabled list. "That's what I'd like," Brown said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Francona Spends Game 3 Listening in a Hospital April 7 New York Times: About an hour after Francona arrived at the Stadium, he was still feeling queasy and was sent to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell hospital with what the Red Sox called tightness in his chest. Francona, who turns 46 on April 22, has had a history of circulatory problems, and two and a half years ago, he overcame near-fatal blood clots. ------------------------------------------------- Need some votes for my site.
