Pavano to debut for Yanks
April 5
New York Daily News: Much was made of Carl Pavano's lunch with Curt Schilling over the winter, since the Red Sox were angling to land the free-agent righthander and Pavano had admired Schilling as a kid. But ultimately, it was a conversation Pavano had with Joe Torre that made the difference in his decision about where to sign.
Torre had heard speculation that Pavano wasn't interested in playing in New York and wanted the opportunity to talk with the pitcher, while Pavano wanted to set the record straight about his willingness to come to the Bronx. The meeting, which took place at a West Palm Beach restaurant in November, resonated with both.
Now, five months later, Pavano - after inking a four-year, $39.95 million deal - will take the ball in the second game of the Yankees season and make his debut against Boston today. He admitted near the end of spring training that he is prone to excitability, but said he doesn't believe he'll be overwhelmed by his surroundings.

Matsui means the most
April 5
New York Daily News:
Matsui is too modest. He reached over the wall, and removed a sure home run from the box score. There may not be a better catch out there this season. And Johnson - who is supposed to lock out the rest of the world when he's pitching - made sure to ask the translator how to say awesome in Japanese. The word is saikoh, pronounced psycho.
"Saikoh" became the pitcher's thank you to the left fielder. Who came through with three hits, including a two-run homer. Matsui hit .361 against Boston last year and was even better in the playoffs - .412, 10 RBI. If there was a Yankee MVP in that series, well, forget it, that player didn't exist.
His success against Boston? There's "nothing I can attribute it to," he said. "As far as I know I take the same approach."
That approach, if he can spread it around the league, might require the translator to come up with the words that mean Most Valuable Player.

Psycho-Ed Up
April 5
New York Post: The Big Unit killed Godzilla and gave birth to Psycho.
Since Hideki Matsui was 18, his nickname has been "Godzilla" because of his size and strength. But all it took was one Randy Johnson start to hang a new moniker on the Yankees' left fielder.
Shortly after Matsui went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBIs and a spectacular catch to deny Kevin Millar a two-run homer in Sunday night's 9-2 Opening Day win over the Red Sox, Johnson asked Rogelio Kahlon to translate awesome into Japanese.
Matsui's interpreter came back with a word that sounded like the English word psycho and Johnson immediately hung "Psycho" on Matsui.

Fans make Tino feel like champ
April 5
Newark Star-Ledger: Tino Martinez has enjoyed some great moments in a Yankees uniform. This is, after all, a man who won four World Series while wearing it. Martinez was wearing the pinstripes once again at Yankee Stadium after a three-year stint playing for St. Louis and Tampa, and received perhaps the loudest ovations of any Yankees player in a 9-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox to open the season.
It was quite an achievement, considering the luminaries that surround him. A day later, Martinez still could not get over it.
"I got introduced, and I figured, well, they've treated me so well when I've come back as a visiting player, so I wasn't shocked (by the ovation) when I was introduced," he said. "But when I took the field and got another ovation, I was shocked by that, and when I got up to bat, the same thing. It just kept going and going.
"It's definitely a night I'll never forget. I had a lot of good times here, and World Series, and wins, but to come back and play here again, it's definitely near the top of the list. It was one of the best experiences of my life to be here, to be a Yankee, so this was right up there with all the World Series games."

Yank bleacher features for sale
April 5
New York Daily News: If you're having a hard time getting good Yankee Stadium seats, maybe you should just buy some. To christen the 2005 baseball season and boost city revenues, plastic seats ripped out of the Bronx ballpark in 1998 and 1999 will go on sale in two weeks.
"They're authentic down to the seat number," said Mark Daly, spokesman for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
The 100 sets of three seats will be sold for $1,500 each, beginning at 9 a.m. on April 18 at CityStore, at 1 Centre St. in lower Manhattan.
The seat sale is a followup to one last year, when 100 triple sets sold out in two hours and raised $150,000 for the city's general fund.

Regis: Boss loves Damon
April 5
New York Daily News: That was evident when Damon made an appearance on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' yesterday morning and host Regis Philbin, a Yankee fan who watched Sunday's opener from George Steinbrenner's box, told Damon that The Boss had been gushing about him.

Brown dealing with pain
April 5
New York Daily News: After two sessions with his physical therapist at home in Macon, Ga., Kevin Brown's balky back feels better but the righthander admitted there may never be a point where he isn't dealing with pain.
That isn't encouraging for the Yankees or Brown, though the hope is still that the righthander will be able to pitch on April 17, the day he's eligible to come off the disabled list. Brown said he doesn't think getting a cortisone injection to numb the pain would be useful at this point, but wouldn't rule out taking a shot if that's what it takes in the future.
"It's possible," he said. "I've done it in the past when I thought it was necessary. If I think it'll help, I'll do it in the future."
Joe Torre said Brown will lay low for a few days (perhaps playing catch) and could throw a bullpen session as early as Thursday. Brown first tweaked his back slipping on the mound at Legends Field on March 21, and said he would prefer not to be sent on a minor league rehab start before being activated because, he said, it's more likely he'd encounter a poorly kept mound again in the minors.

I wish Brown would just retire for medical reasons and insurance pay off his contract. He's worse than useless at this point. <_<
