The bullpen is already poor. Any injury to DeJean just adds to the problem.

the bullpen is poor from the lefthand side, on the righthanded side we got two closers as a setup - closer combo, and good talents in bell and fortunato. We also have a darkhorse with scott strickland. Lefthand side worries me though, we got no one.

if mike is going to be out a substantial amount of time (i doubt it) then something needs to be done.

DeJean was for a mediocre Brewers team. he then lost his job to Danny Kolb and got dealt to the Cardinals to be a set up man.

Looper was part of a closer by committee in 2002 after Alfonseca got dealt. In 2003, he lost his job after blowing key games down the stretch to the Braves and Phillies.

Yes, both have been/are closers, but neither is really deserving.

I think Looper was pretty damn good last season for us.

He was adequate. He was far from great.

Didn't he have a long stretch sometime where he didn't give up any earned runs?

I wouldn't call him a superstar, but he was more than adequate.

Looper faded significantly at the end of the season.

And sunshine, this is the exact same injury DeJean had last year. So it is a big deal.

timo don't be silly, looper did a really good job for the mets last season, the mets do need urbina but the closer for the mets this season will be looper and no one else, also dejean's injury doesn't seem to be that serious!!!

broken ankle.

No need to overeact, we'll need an extra arnm or 2 at the trade deadline (to eat innings for everyone including Looper)

No need to panic till then

Urbina Loves New York

Quote:

There is certainly no questioning Urbina's feelings about the Big Apple. He said yesterday, "I love New York," noting his stats against the Mets and Yankees (Urbina owns a career ERA against the Mets of 2.39 and a career ERA against the Yankees of 2.55, according to the Elias Sports Bureau).

Said Urbina, obviously referring to the high-intensity New York atmosphere, "I love the pressure."

Ah, but would he love pitching the eighth inning? The Mets already have Braden Looper. Urbina and Looper were teammates on Florida's world championship team in 2003. Urbina was initially acquired by the Marlins to be a set-up man but eventually replaced Looper as the closer. Still, Looper is the Mets closer and is coming off a terrific season.

Asked if he'd be all right with setting up on another club, Urbina replied, "It depends on who's closing on that team." Asked about the Mets and Looper specifically, Urbina said, "We'll see if they trade me here."

Urbina actually pitched the fifth inning of yesterday's 6-3 Tigers win, so the Mets got a glimpse of what the 31-year-old can still do. Urbina, who registered 21 saves in 24 chances last year along with a 4.50 ERA, allowed one run on two hits in the inning. He reached 92 mph and said he feels terrific.

"I feel strong and ready," he said. "For me, the season can start tomorrow."

Urbina is not the only reliever the Mets are tracking. They have been interested in Tampa closer Danys Baez, and in fact, superscout Bill Livesey has been eying the Devil Rays on a daily basis. Industry scuttlebutt is that Livesey has been there to see Tampa Bay's relievers in general but Baez in particular. Other Tampa bullpen arms — Jesus Colome, Trever Miller and Jorge Sosa — are also available, and the Mets continue to check in regarding Boston's Byung-Hyun Kim.
