McEwing signs with Royals

March 22, 2005
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- Joe McEwing signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals and was invited to spring training Tuesday, five days after being released by the New York Mets.

The 32-year-old McEwing was hitting .133 this spring (2-for-15) when he was given the option of staying and working out with the Mets or being released outright. He opted to be released.

Kansas City is in need of a utility player who can play third base. Mark Teahen, who has no major league experience, is the only true third baseman left in camp. McEwing, Denny Hocking and Luis Ugueto, two non-roster invitees, can fill that role.

McEwing hit .254 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 75 games with the Mets. He played all three outfield positions, first base, second base, shortstop and third base last season.

In 664 games with the Mets and St. Louis Cardinals over seven seasons, McEwing has a .253 batting average with 24 home runs and 152 RBIs.

It wouldn't shock me if he starts for them eventually. Afterall, that's a lineup which features Chris Truby (until Teahen is ready), Ruben Gotay, and an outfielder from the group of Eli Marrero, Abraham Nunez, and Aaron Guiel

It would be silly to start him. It's better to let him back up young guys.

Of course it would. But the problem is, the Royals don't have much in terms of mLB ready prospects. DeJesus, Teahen, Buck, and perhaps Huber will all end up starting sometime this season, but that still leaves 2b and the corner outfield positions to be filled by mediocre veterans.

i liked guiel when i saw him against the yanks years ago. i had no clue until recently that he was already in his thirties. man, are the royals royally screwed. that grienke supposedly throws 6 pitches effectively for strikes, but where is the talent around him whether in the pen or starting. jose lima? mike macdougal took major steps backwards after his first half of his rookie season. weve been hearing how jeremy affeldt had stuff comparable to the top lefties in the league. now there's no way of knowing if he'll even be a successful closer. id hate to be a fan of that team
