Rivera sidelined by sore elbow

March 14, 2005
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will be out at least a few days with mild bursitis in his right elbow.

Rivera underwent an MRI after feeling some soreness Monday.

``It's not a major concern,'' manager Joe Torre said. ``It showed a little irritation. He's shut down tonight. The indication is it won't lay him up for a long time. He will probably pitch by the end of the week.''

Rivera is not concerned, and expects to be ready for opening day.

``I threw yesterday and everything was fine,'' Rivera said. ``Today, I got to the field and it felt like my elbow was a little sore. It's a little swelling in the elbow. I'll be ready for the season.''

The Yankees have been taking a slow approach with the 35-year-old right-hander this spring. Rivera has allowed one hit in three scoreless innings spanning three appearances.

``It's nothing that he felt throwing a pitch,'' Torre said. ``It's just something that he felt and we sent him right over to get an MRI. Obviously, if you're going to have a result, this is one you can live with.''

Rivera went 4-2 with 53 saves and a 1.94 ERA in 74 games last season but blew three save chances in the playoffs. One was in Game 4 of the AL championship series, when the Yankees were three outs from sweeping Boston. New York had a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning of Game 5 when Tom Gordon gave up a leadoff homer to David Ortiz, then allowed the Red Sox to put runners at the corners. Rivera came in and gave up Jason Varitek's tying sacrifice fly.

Rivera didn't throw during the offseason, but doesn't believe that had any impact.

``Nothing related to that at all,'' Rivera said.

He is getting older and there is a lot of wear and tear on his body parts. You have got to expect these things and use him wisely so he makes the biggest impact. This puts more pressure on Torre but thats why the pay him what he earns. Don't worry about it.

I'm not terribly worried, but aren't those about the worst words ever: "Problem with Mo."

I hate that.

Actually, I can think of a few worse words: "CM, I'm late."

Not fond of those either.

He didn't throw all winter and now he's not getting a lot of work in this spring. Not good, I could see him having a down year. If he does, we're f*cked. It's bad enough Boston owns him, we don't need other teams teeing off on him too. :no1:

like i said, this team better prepare for life without mo starting next off-season. there are a few closers available. nobody sticks out any further than billy wagner though. imagine that gas coming out of our pen.

I just see Mo getting more and more inconsistent over the next couple years, I've really lost confidence in him. But we won't be looking for replacements any time soon.

Our minor leaguers are all trash, each and every one of them, Wang included. I don't want to see that guy on the Yankees until call ups in September, and even then, I still don't want to see him on the mound.

MM would know, he's a big fan of that guy for some reason. :dunno:

We don't need a damn scouting report to know what Wang throws. Before MM brought him up, I had never heard of the guy but I know he throws 87-88 mph with no movement and he doesn't have a breaking ball. How? Every pitcher in our minor leagues is Paul Quantrill w/o the experience.

Actually.......Amit sent me this a while ago from Pinstripe Plus:

Chien-Ming Wang: Perhaps the polar opposite of the number one on this list, Chien-Ming Wang knows exactly where his fastball is going at all times. But, besides that, the impressive thing about Wang is his ability to keep his velocity deep into the game. He has been said to have thrown 98 MPH many times in the eighth inning of ballgames. And, his fastball normally sits comfortably in the 92-95 MPH range, getting over that mark several times as well.

suck my Wang

This is a direct result of not throwing all off season. Who the hell gave him that advice? Cone did the same thing before the '00 season and we all know what happened that year.

Actually I think it's a result of 74 appearances last year.

It's a result of Gene Monohan and Steve Donhue giving bad advice. Time for them to go.
