When the Mets signed Pedro Martinez, you probably heard a lot that they signed a guy who's only a six-inning starter. And that sometime around 100 pitches, he needs to be pulled or he loses his effectiveness.

There's only one problem. Neither is true.

"It's a perception that the media has perceived because of isolated incidences," Met pitching coach Rick Peterson says.

Peterson is correct, of course, which is why it's time to de-bunk the two biggest myths about Pedro's pitching.

Start with the idea that Martinez can't go past the sixth inning. In Martinez's 33 regular season starts for Boston last year, he failed to go six innings just five times. He went exactly six innings six times. And he went more than six innings 22 times — two-thirds of his starts.

That's the same number of times as Roger Clemens and more times than younger aces like Carlos Zambrano (20 times) and Barry Zito (18).

Of course, there may be some who scoff at that and say, "Sure, but how did he perform from the seventh inning on?" Well, in innings 1-6 last year, the 33-year-old Martinez held hitters to a .239 average. In innings 7-9, the average against him was .226. That's right — batters fared worse against him in the later innings.

Last season, from pitches 91-105, batters hit just .187 against Martinez. From pitches 106-120, they hit slightly better (.244), but still worse than they hit against him in pitch segments 1-15 (.333), 31-45 (.259) and 46-60 (.252).

The numbers are "just not as good as what they are normally, but that's [because] his career batting average against is .206 [actually .209]," Peterson explained. "That's sick."

im new to this met board section, but i dont recall ever perceiving pedro as a six inning pitcher and i dont know why anyone would. he rarely gives a complete game, but he usually is good for 7 innings and 110 pitches. his numbers last year were fluky in that he gave up more two strike hits and whatnot. if it were any other pitcher, younger or whatnot, thered be all this talk about how he was unlucky last season and expect better. but for some reason with pedro, people seem to want to think hes done, which is stupid. i found it pretty stupid that this guy didnt get peak interest. really last year was the worst he had to offer. and 3.90 in fenway is probably equivalent to a 3.45 in shea. and its not farfetched to expect him to do a lot better than that. hes got a lot left

The media said Leiter was a 6 inning pitcher. But he was more of a 5 inning pitcher. The media just has to fill columns.

VOTE FOR PEDRO!

All the sudden Pedro bashing is nothing more than a by-product of Met hatred at ESPN. All those jock-holders are based in New England and have a seething ax to grind against the Mets. Look at Steve Phillips for cryin out loud. It's always been that way. You should read Gammons' columns on ESPN before Pedro went to the Mets and after. What a difference! Before the Mets were a player for Pedro, Gammons thought Pedro was the best pitcher on earth. As soon as it became clear that Pedro would be a Met, he's broken down and past his prime.

Don't let those hacks influence your opinions about anything baseball related.

Which family guy episode?

havnt seen it in awhile. They blow up the city or something and they'er wandering artround and they meet a cult. And the cult leader is like "Name something you like" (I think)

Stewie was like "Dead Louise"
the other 3 said somethin I dont remember
Peter was like "Potato Salad"

So the cult leader points to the sky and says "Show me potato salad" and then it gets awkward bc/ they'e waiting for god to make the potato salad appear.

good stuff

It was the Y2K episode called Da Boom.

All the nukes went off for the millenium and that was the episode where Peter fights the chicken that gave him a bad coupon.

I highly recommend One if by Clam, Two if by Sea.

That's the one where the "limey brittish bastards" purchased the gang's favorite bar. Probably my favorite, but the best scene in any episode is where brian gets his first bump of coke.
