Strawberry A Blast From Past

Quote:

The tall, thin man in the Mets warmup jacket made his way through the rows of lockers in the Tradition Field clubhouse yesterday morning, extending his hand to players half his age. To some, he added, "I'm Darryl Strawberry."

He didn't really have to say that.

Strawberry put on part, but not all, of a Mets uniform for the first time in 15 years yesterday when he began his stint as a guest spring-training instructor. Looking fit and in good spirits, the 6-6 former All-Star donned gray uniform pants and a Mets cap, but he chose not to put on a blue, black and orange jersey with his name and old No. 18 on the back.

"Just a T-shirt," he said. "Everybody wants me to put on a uniform. What would I do in a uniform?"

Judging from his youthful appearance -- he turns 43 Saturday but is younger than Andres Galarraga -- it looked as if he could do plenty, at least in batting practice.

But Strawberry, who left the Mets as a free agent after the 1990 season and last played in 1999 with the Yankees, swore he is "not curious at all" to see if he's still got that picture-perfect lefty power swing.

he doesn't have the best character, but i highly doubt he's going to get the mets hooked on coke.

i'm glad straw is back with the mets, i think he's finally turned his life around and he'll be a positive influence on the younger players cause he's been through it all!!!
