Mets Trying To Move Heilman

Quote:

This and that: The Cubs, Diamondbacks and Pirates have expressed an interest in Aaron Heilman, whom the Mets are actively trying to move. ... Catchers Jesus Flores and John Pachot were assigned to minor league camp, as was southpaw Tim Hamulack. ... Heilman, who allowed a pair of homers in his first outing last week, allowed another homer to Atlanta, this time a three-run shot by Pete Orr. ... Felix Heredia is expected to throw on Tuesday, marking the first time he has been on the mound since experiencing numbness in his left hand on Wednesday. ... Phillips, noted for his lack of speed, beat out an infield hit and tagged up and advanced a base on a fly ball in the second inning. "It's been a while since I did that," he noted. "Maybe little league." Phillips and Doug Mientkiewicz had a pair of hits. ... Ron Calloway threw out Andy Marte from right field as he tried to stretch a single into a double in the second inning. ... Scott Stewart looked impressive, throwing a pair of scoreless innings. With Heredia's status still uncertain, Stewart has a chance to earn one of the left-handed spots in the 'pen. He's appeared in two games and hasn't allowed a run in three innings.

I am still trying to figure out what the Mets saw in him to warrant wasting a high draft pick on this guy. It was during the “lets not draft anybody who can break a pane of glass with his fastball” period. Since the Tom Seaver period the Mets were know for drafting hard throwing pitchers. Koosman, Gentry, Matlack, Swan, Ryan, Gooden etc all had great fastballs. It seems with the problems they had with Paul Wilson, Pulsipher, Sao, etc they changed their drafting approach to guys who don’t throw hard, but would keep the ball down, change speeds, etc. Dotel, Isringhausen and Kazmir could all throw hard and they are gone. I don’t like wasting a high draft pick on a Jamie Moyer type. I like sticking with a guy who can throw hard. It appears with the drafting of Kazmir and now Humber that period is over. I think it was a Steve Phillips philosophy to draft and trade for lollipop throwers.

heilman was highly touted coming out of notre dame, everyone knew he wasn't a #1 or #2 starter, they projected him to be a middle of the rotation kind of pitcher, he does have some good stuff but he can't keep the ball down and has a ton of control problems, he's had his fair share of chances, it's time for him to go!!!

I felt he is good insurance for when Zammy has to have that midseason surgery. But I think at this point, moving to a smaller team with less expectations would be far better for him than wasting away in the minors again. I maintain that the Mets are responsible for ruining his career to date. He had a horrid start to last season following an impressive preseason where he pitched well enough for a spot in the rotation, but didn't get in. He came on well in the end. A team like Pitt, KC is a place where he may be given a chance for a protracted period of time. In places like that, he can probably become a solid middle of the rotation guy.

As for us not picking fireballers, that's not true. We drafted Kazmir. We just decided to give him away as a Christmas present.

lol here we go again, the mets gave him plenty of chances, he pitched like sh*t when he was first called up, he pitched ok last year in spring training but was beat out by 2 pitchers that pitched better than he did (yates and erickson)! he pitched like sh*t when for a while when he first got to norfolk, he pitched better and won like 7 straight starts but when he was called up again he got destroyed and now again he's getting smacked all over the place this spring training, face it he sucks, he always has!!!
