NO major leaguer faces a more daunt ing spring training than Jason Giambi.

Barry Bonds, you say?

While Bonds is higher profile and is on the brink of passing Babe Ruth en route to Hank Aaron's homer record, he is blessed — or is it cursed? — with the ability to coldly shut people and impressions out, and excel regardless of criticism raging around him.

Giambi wants to be liked, hates confrontation and makes Ed Whitson appear a bastion of New York mental toughness in comparison. Heck, Perry Mason never broke a witness as easily as the government did Giambi. If the San Francisco Chronicle's reporting is to be believed — and it has been Pulitzer quality to date — Giambi reacted on the grand jury stand to his implication in the BALCO mess by confessing everything short of taking Fredo Corleone out on the lake.

Also, Bonds was an MVP winner at a more innocent 185 pounds. Giambi's MVP came well after he had outgrown being a 185-pound third baseman who was unlikely to fashion a meaningful major league career.

"If Giambi plays this year at a less-puffed-up version of himself and does not do much, it is going to be a reminder of just how fake his previous numbers were," an AL executive said. That has to weigh on a weak mind.

So what is Giambi to do? He is expected to talk to the media in the next two weeks, according to several sources. That is wise. By making himself available now, Giambi potentially defuses some of the brouhaha around him and his teammates when he reports to Legends Field. Yet even here he navigates landmines.

The Yanks want out of Giambi's remaining four years at $82 million and presently do not have a winning case. The grand jury testimony the Chronicle reported upon is officially sealed. But if Giambi publicly acknowledges steroid use he might provide ammunition for the Yanks to void his contract.

The team's strongest argument is that by denying steroid use to club doctors on direct questioning last year, Giambi did not receive proper medical counsel, exacerbating other medical problems, including a tumor in his pituitary gland. Therefore, Giambi may have violated standard contractual provisions that a player must keep himself in first-class condition. Against the Players Association, this also is probably not a winning case, but might offer an avenue for the Yanks to do a buyout, perhaps at 50 cents on the dollar.

Damn right he's on the hot seat. This guy owes us big time for all the money he has stolen. What a horrendous signing this turned out to be. Pathetic. :-|

Horrendous is an understatement for how bad a signing Giambi was.

Has to be one of the top 5 WORST signings in Yankee, maybe even sports, history. I can't really think of words to describe it, so I just put "horrendous."

I completely got the Javy thing wrong. I watched him pitch 2 games on t.v. where he masterfully pitched into the 9th inning. He was so dominant and a fighter. I was totally convinced he would be a good signing. I now believe in the New York factor. Not everyone can handle it. :blahblah:

The King
When Giambi signed with The Yankees,We all thought that He was gonna do great when He was with The A's,But He sucks in Yankee Pinstripes, than with any California team.

I hope that Giambi's contract with The Yankees comes to an end by 2006,or 2007,and I hope that He signs with any California team it could be The Dodgers,The Giants,The Padres,The A's,or The Angels, and once Giambi signs with any California team He'll have a great year, than with The Yankees.

Mel is a bad pitching coach, BUT... Vazquez was as gutless as they come and that isn't Mel's fault.

It doesn't help that our pitching coach is completely useless.

Has to be one of the top 5 WORST signings in Yankee, maybe even sports, history. I can't really think of words to describe it, so I just put "horrendous."

at the time of the signing, it looked like one of the best Yankee siginings in recent memory. I know I thought it was an excellent deal.

I think people should give him a chance to make things right.....of course, he's not on my team so it's easy for me to say that. Still, he seems like a good guy who truly wanted to be a Yankee.

Some of us thought the contract was AT LEAST 2 years to long. <_<

:please: I'll go out on a limb and say Giambi's gonna have a surprisingly good season (considering :smirk: )

I'd be real happy with:

.285 27hr 107rbi .390obp

his career averages are:

.297 34hr 114rbi .411obp

but that includes his early years when he was nothin special. :peace:
