Wolfgang Schaden - the Austrian surgeon who helped repair Magglio Ordonez's left knee last summer using shock-wave therapy - sees no medical reason the right fielder cannot return to full strength by spring training, The Chicago Tribune reports. "I am convinced this problem is healed," Schaden told the newspaper.

Schaden is world-renowned for advances in the use of shock-wave therapy and helped Ordonez after White Sox team podiatrist Lowell Weil connected the two. Schaden believes the therapy offered Ordonez what conventional treatment could not: the chance to avoid surgery and cut his recovery time in half.

If Ordonez - whose knee was afflicted with bone-marrow edema - had not sought the alternative that took him to Europe, where the treatment is approved, Schaden predicted U.S. surgeons would have drilled a hole into Ordonez's femur to begin the same type of healing the shock waves did. "I always felt comfortable," said Ordonez

Basically, using a machine similar to those used for ultrasounds, electric charges induced the production of different proteins and stimulated blood supply to help the bone recover and grow.
Ordonez commends Schaden, who also fixed a torn meniscus, for reducing his rehab time from six months to three months (to December rather than March). The difference could mean millions as a handful of teams, including the Cubs, maintain interest. "He's a great doctor and a great guy," said Ordonez. "I always felt comfortable."

The Orioles and the Cubs, two teams with outfield holes and the financial means, are the front-runners in the pursuit of Magglio Ordonez, The Chicago Tribune reports.

How healthy is Ordonez's surgically repaired left knee?  Ordonez says he's ready to work out for any team, according to The Tribune.  But The Baltimore Sun reports that Ordonez is "weeks away from doing any baseball-related activities after a second surgery on his left knee in September."

"The doctors have cleared me," Ordonez told The Tribune. "I'll be ready to play by spring training. Everybody will see. I'm pain-free and in better shape than ever now after rehabbing so long."

The Cubs, Mets and Orioles have requested and received Ordonez's medical records, The Tribune reports.

Unless George has really put the brakes on, I don't understand why we don't at least explore a deal with M.O.
