Mike V (E Hanover,NJ): What Do you think of the Yankees' aquisition of Tony Womack? I thought that Cairo was a better fit especially since he showed he could perform in the playoffs.
Jayson Stark: Cairo gave them more versatility. But my understanding is that in negotiations, he overplayed his hands and actually got Steinbrenner ticked off. So they wound up signing Womack, whom they hadn't even negotiated with until the day before they signed him. If Womack stays healthy and gets on base the way he did last year, he's a weapon. But we all know he hasn't done that consistently.
- Quote:
-
Rich, Ny: What do you think will happen with The Pariah of NY Kevin Brown?
Jayson Stark: They're stuck with him. Can't find a taker unless they pay all the salary. And they don't feel like paying $14-15M to have him pitch somewhere else. So they'll be stuck bringing him back and praying he goes out there 30 times. It is his free-agent year, and that's been known to have some healing powers.
- Quote:
-
Garri from Teaneck NJ: Have the Yankees improved their starting rotation and do they have enough depth in the rotation to win the World Series?
Jayson Stark: That's the biggest question people have about them. I think they're definitely better if everyone stays healthy and does what they're supposed to do. But they have no veteran starters to fall back on if Johnson or Wright have old health issues flare up. Or Mussina, for that matter. Heck, they don't even have Alex Graman. This could be a great rotation if things break right. But depth is a real worry. I got bombarded with emails from Yankees fans when I pointed that out in a column this month. So let me clear that up. I think they're now the favorites to win it all. But this is one of a bunch of things that could still go wrong, even at 200 million bucks.

So the new thing now is to have 6th, 7th and 8th starters? Brillo Pad Head can f*ck off. Sturtze and Wang can fill in fine if somebody should go down with an injury.

I think we should too. There is nobody at Columbus (except possibly Wang) who can step up when needed. With some of the age in the rotation, they will be needed. Should have kept the Duke of Death. :no1:

I like the Dukee too, CM, but no way he stays to work out of the pen when he got 8mil elsewhere to start. And we couldn't guarantee him a starters spot becuase of his shaky health and Kevin Brown. :peace:
What happened to Graman? Did we trade him or is he hurt? :dunno:
I think DePaula can be counted on for depth later this year. So we have Sturtze, Wang and DePaula. I'd still like to get Steve Sparks :monster: on a minor league deal. I think he might do fairly well (like .500) as an emergency starter since he represents such a contrast with flamethrowers like Johnson. I have no doubt that the Yanks will make at least one more move in this area before the season starts.
What about: CF, a versatile Utility Infielder and a good lefty for the pen. These are more pressing issues in my mind. ;)

2 years, 8 million is the exact offer I proposed before he walked.

I'm not sure what DePaula status is. I like him, but has anybody heard anything?

How Clairvoyant. :bigthink:
(2yr/8mil for a reliever/spot starter? :wtf: )
Even with that offer, I still think he goes to Chicago 'cuase no Brown so he knows he'll be starting. :peace:

Actually, I might have gone with 2 years 8 million for the 5th starter, and 15 million for the 6th starter. ;)
I always point to this, but we gave Hitchsuckscock 2 years, 12 million for that role a few years back.

That's becuase he sucked so bad, he got moved to the pen. We signed him as a starter. ;)

Are you sure? That is possible, but I seem to recall that the intent was for him to be the 6th guy.

They signed him to be the 5th starter, but then they stole Wells from the D-Backs and Hitch got moved to 6th.
