Since The San Francisco Chronicle reported last month that Giambi had told a federal grand jury that he used steroids before signing with the Yankees in December 2001 and when he was playing for them in 2002 and 2003, Giambi has not talked publicly about his testimony.

But Arn Tellem, Giambi's agent, said yesterday that Giambi intended to meet with reporters in February before he goes to spring training. Tellem added that Giambi had begun two-a-day workouts and described him as working out intensely in preparation for the 2005 season.

"His spirits are very good, Tellem said in a telephone interview. "He's feeling the best he has in a long time. He's very determined to come back and show everybody he's the quality player he's always been."

The Yankees have soured on Giambi because of his erratic, mysterious season in 2004 and because of the report that he had admitted using steroids. But the team appears resigned to having Giambi this spring. The Yankees have had no discussions with Tellem about Giambi, but they did contact the commissioner's office Friday to discuss Giambi, and a baseball official said the Yankees were eager to do something about his situation. Giambi, 34, has four years and $82 million remaining on his seven-year, $120 million contract. The Yankees would love to sever the relationship by buying out part of his contract, but the Major League Baseball Players Association would surely contend that the Yankees must pay Giambi the full amount he is owed and release him if they are so dissatisfied.

Still, the Yankees are trying to save money on Giambi's contract in other ways. According to the National Underwriter, an insurance journal, the Yankees recently filed a claim with American Specialty Underwriters to recover part of Giambi's salary. The Yankees and American Specialty would not comment on the insurance policy.

If Giambi could come back healthy & hit .260+, 25+HR & 85+RBI batting in the 6 or 7th spot i'd take it.
Sure it would be better if he were of the team & Tino played full time, but that's not going to happen.
So the Yanks can only hope that he stays healthy & that he can be a productive bat in the bottom of the lineup.

4 more year seems like a really long time of having him around. Wasn't the best idea to give him that long of a contract.
