Yankees News For January 11 Tue Jan-11-05 07:11 AM Yankees News For January 11 --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for January 11: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- Big Unit does get physical January 11 New York Daily News: The Big Unit already has had his first Big Meltdown in the Big Apple. On his way to the physical that finally cemented his long-awaited trade to the Yankees, Randy Johnson and his bodyguard got physical in a heated argument with a local television cameraman - and later with a Daily News photographer - yesterday morning in separate incidents on Madison Ave. between 58th and 60th Sts. For the ornery Johnson, the five-time Cy Young award winner who formally will be introduced in his new baseball home at a 2 p.m. press conference today at Yankee Stadium, this was a telling initial introduction to the increased media scrutiny he now will face as New York's latest imported star. "Regarding the unfortunate incident that happened this morning as I was on my way to take a physical, I hope that everyone will understand that the past few days have been a bit overwhelming and I wish I had handled the situation differently," Johnson said in a statement released yesterday by agent Alan Nero. "I am very sorry it happened." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheff getting preheated for spring training January 11 New York Daily News: Pitchers and catchers are slated to report to spring training in barely one month, but Tampa resident Gary Sheffield already is working out regularly at the Yankees' training facility. Sheffield, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder Nov. 30, expects to be ready to go when newcomer Randy Johnson and the rest of his teammates arrive for the start of camp. "I'll be ready," Sheffield told The Associated Press yesterday at the Tampa complex. "I feel like I'm ahead of schedule. It's coming along good." Sheffield's shoulder nagged him throughout his first season with the Yankees, but he still batted .290 with 36 homers and 121 RBI to finish second in the AL MVP voting to Anaheim's Vladimir Guerrero. While the Yankees bailed out of the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes, Sheffield is happy the team concentrated on upgrading its pitching with the pickups of Johnson, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and others this winter. "I'm definitely excited," Sheffield said. "With our offense, we feel like we can accomplish anything. We tried to jump a big hurdle last year, we had a lot of pitchers injured. Unfortunately, our offense wasn't able to take us all the way through." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cashman: Bombers Never Put In Bid On Carlos January 11 New York Post: The Yankees never bid for Carlos Beltran, general manager Brian Cashman explained yesterday, not because they did not consider the switch-hitting center fielder an elite player, but because even George Steinbrenner's team has a bottom line — not just bottomless pockets. In the final hours Saturday night before the Astros lost the chance to retain Beltran and the Mets emerged as his post-midnight last, best alternative, agent Scott Boras called the Yanks to say his client preferred to play with them, and would do so for six years at $99.6 million. That was far under the 10 years at $200 million Boras initially proposed to the Yanks, and even fewer than the seven years at $119 million the Mets used to harpoon the best free agent of the offseason. Nevertheless, with the Yanks well over the luxury tax already and having to shell out 40 cents extra on every new dollar they would spend, they decided — to the shock of baseball and the Boras camp — to sit on their wallet. "Believe me, George Steinbrenner has done enough to provide us options and opportunity," Cashman said. "To ask for us to throw another log on an already huge fire is just unreasonable." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yankees Facing Shared Spotlight and More Glare January 11 New York Times: First, George Steinbrenner had to share his wealth with fellow owners. Today, his Yankees will share the spotlight with the Mets, who are acting like an increasingly pesky kid brother across town. Today at 2 p.m., the Yankees are scheduled to finally introduce the ace left-hander Randy Johnson at a news conference at Yankee Stadium. Three hours earlier, at Shea Stadium, the Mets are planning to show off outfielder Carlos Beltran, the second jewel of their bold off-season. The free-agent starter Pedro Martínez was the other. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The good side of Randy Johnson January 11 New York Daily News: The numbers are almost gaudy: 17 years in the big leagues, 246 wins, 4,161 strikeouts, 92 complete games (including one perfect game and another no-hitter) not to mention five Cy Young awards and a big, fat, sparkling World Series ring that came at the Yankees' expense. You think the Bombers aren't happy to see Randy Johnson in pinstripes? George Steinbrenner has been waiting for today for years. The questions now are obvious: How does he do it? And, with a three-year contract that won't expire until he's 44, can he keep on doing it in the Bronx? The Daily News asked a variety of people who have come into contact with Johnson during his career for a detailed scouting report on what to expect now that the Big Unit is finally a Yankee. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Click here for links to full articles then click READ MORE under Yankees news for January 11: http://www.yankeemania.com --------------------- |
