I've always believed in clutchness, but I'm starting to question it. 1. If a guy focusses more or "buckles down" in the big situation, then why doesn't he do that more often? Doesn't that mean that the guy would be half-assing it other times? If all it takes is focus to shine, then you should play better than you do. 2. A lot of the time, averages work themselves out. Brett Favre, who people regard as super-clutch, has thrown 34 TDs and 26 INTs in his playoff career. Jeter's post season batting average is about the same as his regular season average (little lower). There's hotstreaks and slumps in the regular season, same for the playoffs. 3. People seem to highlight the positive. People who we say are clutch, they fail more times than they succeed in the big spot. Jordan has said that he's missed more big shots than he's made. What did Jeter hit in the 2001 and 2003 World Series? Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the guy. He's my second favorite player (I'm still gagging on Bernie's schlong) but I do think that he's overrated. No way is he the best player in the game. |
