Big Unit shoves cameraman

BY MIKE CASEY

If today's actions are any indication, Randy Johnson has a lot to learn about dealing with the New York media.

The Yankees' newest acquistion engaged in a heated exchange and shoving match with a CBS News cameraman Monday on a Manhattan sidewalk.

Johnson, who is expected today to clear the last hurdle in the blockbuster trade that sent him from Arizona to New York by completing a physical exam, was confronted by the cameraman as he exited a building, accompanied by two security guards. As the camera rolled a few feet away from the 6-foot-10, 231-pound Johnson, he reached out to block the lens.

"C'mon man, I'm just taking a picture," the cameraman said as the security guards attempted to intervene. "No pictures," they warned him.

As the tape continued to roll, Johnson became more agitated. He appeared to shove the cameraman while brushing past him and grumbling "Get out my face!"

"C'mon Randy, I'm just taking a picture!" the photographer repeated.

"I don't care who you are. Don't get in my way, and don't talk back to me!" Johnson scolded as he continued to try to block the lens.

Security guards again intervened, hurrying the 41-year-old lefty away as the cameraman stood in disbelief. "Welcome to New York!" he shouted after Johnson, who by that time was about 20 feet away with his back to the camera.

Big Unit doesn't take sh*t from anybody. I can't wait to see what he does to the Red Sox.

Talk about the media making a story out of nothing. So he didn't want his picture taken? Big f*cking deal, I've been hearing about it all day on WFAN, now see an article today about it, I'm sure the Post will write something tomorrow. What a joke. RJ told the guy to get out of his face, he didn't want his picture taken. The cameraman should've listened. Take the pics tomorrow at the press conference.

Did you see the video? RJ was walking down the street and the cameraman got right in front of him and in his face. I would have probably punched the guy out! You don't need to put a camera in a guys face to take a picture! Now they are going to be killing RJ in the Post tomorrow, just you wait.

My computer won't load the video up so I can't see it. :-|

Edit:

Finally got it to load. I'm thinking the 10-12 stoires the Post and Daily News will have about it tomorrow will be much ado about nothing.

This is a taste of what's to come. Over the next 3 years, there will be a number of spats with the media. They'll be ripping him and he'll loathe them more.

Johnson has to get used to that and know its New York. A couple weeks after A-Rod got here, there was an article in The Post titled, "Mrs. Rodriguez" and it went into detail about A-Rod's strip club attendance. Those Page Six mother f*ckers will be stalking him and he ain't too hard to spot. Unless he wants constant drama, he's gonna have to lighten up off the field.

That "Don't talk back to me" thing was funny. He literally "sonned" him.

You can't take pictures from a few feet away?

Please if RJ were on the Mets you'd be the first one killing this cameraman for what he did.

I know its Randy Johnson, but if I were a pro athlete, I'd feel a little uncomfortable walking down the street. I'd always be thinking, "Oh sh*t, these people know who I am and they've seen the details of the contract. What if I get mugged or held at gunpoint?" I'd be one of those athletes who doesn't walk down a street unless he's got bodyguards or an entourage that goes atleast 5 deep.

I agree with you there. These guys definitely need to watch their backs that's why I think this whole thing is, as usual, being blown out of proportion by the Yankee hating media. If Pedro or any other Met did this, you would have to be searching very hard to even find a little blurb about it.

This whole thing could have been and should have been avoided, if that idiot cameraman had just put the camera down like he was asked to about eight times.
