JETS CONFIDENTIAL Chrebet, Jets may part ways in 2005 Wednesday, December 22, 2004 BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff Veteran WR Wayne Chrebet may be running through the Giants Stadium tunnel for the final time as a Jet Sunday in the home finale against the Patriots, according to a person with knowledge of the club's thinking. Chrebet, one of the most popular Jets ever, is in his 10th season with the club but may be released following this season. He has seen his production slide -- 25 catches, 328 yards, one touchdown this year -- and the Jets are high on rookie wideout Jerricho Cotchery, who was drafted as Chrebet's heir apparent and is a favorite of coach Herman Edwards. Haunted by keeping beloved veterans Marvin Jones and Mo Lewis a year too long last season, the Jets are determined to make smart decisions this time around. If Chrebet stays next season, he would likely be the fourth receiver behind Justin McCareins, Santana Moss and Cotchery -- something that would please neither he nor the Jets. Advertisement Chrebet, 31, can still play and may opt to continue his career elsewhere. His problem with concussions hasn't surfaced this season, but he has five documented concussions and two episodes of post-traumatic migraines. If he were to go, Chrebet would leave as the Jets' second all-time leading receiver. Currently, he has 559 catches for 7,143 yards and 41 touchdowns. Hall of Famer Don Maynard has 627 receptions. In Sunday's 37-14 blowout of the Seahawks, Chrebet went without a reception and didn't have a pass thrown to him -- although the team rang up a season-high 482 yards in total offense. Chrebet, once one of the most feared third-down receivers in the NFL, has just 14 receptions (tied for 23rd in the AFC) for 160 yards and no touchdowns on third down this season. It may be that opponents have finally figured Chrebet out, as they often double him in the slot and jump his routes because they're so familiar with them. In addition, Chrebet, who signed with the Jets in 1995 as an undrafted rookie from Hofstra, has a cap number of $2.3 million for 2005, including a $1 million base salary. It is not a big number but, with several key veterans becoming unrestricted free agents following the season -- John Abraham, Jason Ferguson, Kareem McKenzie -- the Jets may want to redirect that money. Also, Moss is entering the final year of his contract next season and is looking for big money. His base salary was just $455,000 in 2004 and decreases to $448,000 in 2005. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is already angling for a new deal. Moss, in his fourth season, did receive a $3.4 million signing bonus as a rookie. Last March, the Jets signed McCareins to a seven-year, $24.5 million contract that included a $6 million signing bonus. If they re-sign Moss, the Jets would have a lot of money tied up at the receiver position -- and they may want to get Chrebet off the books. It will have been a wonderful and unlikely ride for Chrebet, who many thought was given a tryout as a favor to the school because the Jets train there. To this day, he remains one of the only positives to come out of the Rich Kotite era. http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/b...96735122440.xml He has had a great career as a Jet, a fan favorite and a hustle player. But Chad needs more big targets, and Jerricho Cotchery at 6'0 would be GREAT as a slot WR, big matchup problems. And Chad will be getting more help via the draft in getting a TE Day 1. Back to my point, Chrebet is a high energy guy who will always be a Jet, but, players must move on ya know? He'll be missed, but ya gotta move on...Jerricho Cotchery is a slick name, his size and hands are above average, possesion WR and makes a nice heir to Chrebet.. So for those who attend the games, enjoy watching #80, could be his last game in a Jet uniform at the Meadowlands... Props to a nice career, you the man Wayne... |

I love Wayne, he will go down as one of my all time favorite New York Jets along with Al Toon, Freeman McNeil, Wesley Walker and Curtis Martin. I remember on Christmas Day of 1995 opening up that new gift which was a Wayne Chrebet authentic Jets jersey. I was a big fan from the start, got to love the underdog story. With that being said I probably could have made that team at WR, being that Charles Wison and Ryan Yarborough were the other options. All kidding aside, he made the most of his oppurtunity and blossomed into a solid NFL player. I wish him the best but that's the way the NFL is now because of the cap. |

I'll root for Wayne wherever he goes. He's always been a favorite Jet of mine. My favorite memory of him was when he scored his 2nd touchdown against green bay in 2002. After his costly fumble, it was so great to see him screaming and being great against green bay. He was key that year. Btw, he can still play. he had a great game against buffalo. id hate to see him go, i really would, but if its not meant to be, so be it. Maybe he wasnt the type of player you retire a number after, but hes one to be remembered for a long time. Thanks Wayne. You've been great. |

Good posts ET and Vin...We're all gonna miss #80, and will always be a Jet where he plans to go next season if he plays, like me with Keyshawn...No matter how much bad rap, or how many people wanna hate on Key, he will always be my boy, even if he is a Cowboy, I still root for Key. But Wayne had some good years with the Jets, most notably in out 12-4 year in 98' when he clipped a 1,000 yards and had 8 TD's, damn that was a good team...Vinny,Key,Wayne,CMart, DAYUM...All in all, Wayne will always be a Jet  |

That would be great if he retired of left!!! Think of all the extra cap room!!!! We could sign another guy with all that extra money. I love good ole Wayne, but perhaps is better for the franchise that he goes |

I like Wayne and I'll miss him, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Cotchery in there next season. I think he's going to be a good player for us for years to come. |

Cotchery has to be as good as Wayne at this point. And again, we could maybe sign another FA with the cap room we save on Wayne |
