It's Not A Done Deal Yet

While the Yankees continue to ponder ways to add Randy Johnson to their staff, they remain very interested in free agent left-hander in their own city. Al Leiter is talking to at least two other teams, including the Marlins.

A person close to the situation said Leiter had a meeting with a Yankees front-office official this week at a Manhattan restaurant. It's not clear with whom he met, and GM Brian Cashman -- the most likely candidate -- did not return phone calls seeking comment, but the Yankees are interested in Leiter as they seek left-handed pitchers who can handle the pressure of New York.

The person also said Leiter had received a contract offer from the Florida Marlins, and that offer was better than what the Mets have offered. The Marlins also are speaking to Leiter, who pitched for their 1997 World Series championship team, about doing some television broadcasting work for them in the future.

The Mets have offered a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $4 million with a chance to make $3 million more in incentive bonuses. Leiter is looking for more of a commitment, which is why he hasn't signed, and the involvement of other teams could prod the Mets to increase their offer. The person said Leiter was continuing to negotiate with the Mets, but that there hadn't been much give-and-take in recent days.

Leiter Undecided

Although Al Leiter has pledged his allegiance to the Mets on numerous occasions, baseball sources have told the Daily News he is "still very much undecided" about his future and is not close to signing with the Mets or another team.

The Mets have been putting the finishing touches on a mostly agreed-upon contract for Kris Benson, who is expected to be signed any day to a three-year deal worth $22.5 million guaranteed with a vesting option for 2008.

But while Leiter ultimately might decide to remain with the Mets, it still is believed the Yankees intend to make a strong push to lure Leiter to the Bronx in 2005.
