Benson, Mets Close

It may be taking longer than expected, but any delays have not diminished Kris Benson's desire to finalize a deal with the Mets.

"Right now I want to see if I can get the deal done with the Mets," the free-agent righthander told the Post in a phone interview yesterday. "This is the No. 1 spot I want to be."

The feeling is mutual, and the Mets and Benson's agent, Gregg Clifton, continue to hammer away at negotiations. The two sides are closing in on a deal, with an outside chance that a contract could be in place as early as today.

At the latest, a deal appears likely to be completed by early next week, with the two sides eventually coming to terms on a package in the neighborhood of three years and $23 million.

Benson Deal Nearly Done

The Mets expect to announce the signing of Kris Benson in the next couple of days. Benson and the club have all but finalized a three-year deal worth about $23 million guaranteed with an option for a fourth year.

Benson's agent, Gregg Clifton, did not return calls yesterday, but Benson was on WFAN yesterday expressing confidence that he would be back in New York. He has stated from the day he was traded to the Mets that he wanted to sign a contract extension to stay on, and although talks lagged a bit at times, there was always an expectation that a deal would get done, especially considering the Mets gave up Ty Wigginton and Matt Peterson, their second-highest-ranking pitching prospect, in order to get him.

After being traded to the Mets on July 31, Benson went 4-4 for the Mets with a 4.50 ERA. He was also 8-8 for the Pirates with a 4.22 ERA. Over his career, Benson is 47-53 with a 4.28 ERA and has had only one season with an ERA under 4.00, when he was 10-12 with a 3.85 ERA for the Pirates in 2000.

I agree, he isnt worth what he is getting, but if he slipped away Freddie and Omar would be dealing with pitchforks and fires at Shea
