Benson Is Nearing Deal To Keep Shea His Home

The first free agent the Mets acquire will probably come from within their roster.

Kris Benson indicated yesterday that he was close to signing a contract that would keep him in the Mets' starting rotation. During a radio interview on WFAN, Benson said he hoped and expected to be with the Mets next season.

One club official said that the two sides were nearing an agreement and that a contract could be completed this week. The deal is believed to be for three years, with an option for a fourth year, and would pay $7 million to $8 million a season.

The Mets will continue to negotiate with the representatives for Leiter, but if they cannot make a deal with him soon, they could turn their attention to another starting pitcher. One team official said they might be interested in Jon Lieber, whose option was not exercised by the Yankees.

Coincidentally, the Yankees will most likely pursue Leiter because the Mets did not pick up his option.

After the Mets make decisions on Benson and Leiter, they will begin to make their moves on other free agents. The club has expressed interest in Richie Sexson, the Arizona Diamondbacks' first baseman, who is coming off shoulder surgery. The Mets desperately need a first baseman, and Sexson may be the best one available, an above-average defensive player with power.

Because there are so few first basemen on the market, however, there could be competition for Sexson from Arizona, Baltimore and possibly Seattle. The Diamondbacks reportedly offered Sexson a three-year contract that could reach $10 million a season if he stays healthy.

Boy, could you imagine Lieber and Trachsel pitching in back to back games of a doubleheader. In the time it takes Trachsel to pitch 4 innings, Lieber would be through 9. Batters wouldn't know what the hell is up.

I'd still prefer a power pitcher over Lieber though. Someone like Clement.

We should have just picked up Lieber's 8mil one year option. I can't understand it. This is the first time in recent memory that the Yanks were cheap. <_<

they just want bigger names, that's just the steinbrenner way, they want guys like pedro, pavano, RJ, radke, etc., the problem is the bigger the name doesn't mean better results, lieber had a pretty good season with the yankees, they should at least try to keep him!!!

he was actually even better than his stats. for the first half of the season, he was inconsistent as he was coming back from Tommy John surgery. Plus he also had a hamstring problem when he tried to rush his return. The second half when he was healthy and regained strength, he was awesome and you saw how good he was in the playoffs. Even with all that crap, he won 14 games last year (& 20 with the cubs a few years ago). This is a no-brainer. He needs to be resigned. If he stays healthy, I see him winning 20 this year !

Back the f*ck up! You're not getting Lieber. He is our's. We took the chance on him, coming off arm surgery while you went out and spent the big bucks (trying to buy championships) on Tom Glavine. :please: You missed out.

And he was worth it through the 1st half. A better example would've been Contreras. :peace:

I'm thinking the Yankees would mauch rather have the 5 innings of Al Leiter than John Lieber.
