Maybe im the only one that has missed this up till now but.....

Floyd's $13-million salary over the next two seasons. But the Mets are concerned that the Cubs will want to reach deeper into their organization for another cost-effective player or two if they agree to pick up a fair portion of Sosa's money for next year. Sosa, 36, is scheduled to earn $17 million in 2005, with a $4.5-million buyout if his $18-million option for 2006 is not picked up.

He's looking toward 2006 trying to clear payroll. He has no intention of trying to do a "quick fix" (as has been assumed by many newspapers)

- This is the quickest way possible to get 13 mil due to floyd off the books.

- instead we take on an extra 10 mil in salary this season (assuming they pay nothing) Flip the 4.5 buyout next off-season (this trade is prefaced on getting out from the "automatic option" trade clause in his contract)

and poof we cleared between 7-17 million for next years payroll.

i'm all for the sosa trade as you know but don't forget, if sosa waives the option year for 2005, the mlbpa and sosa's agent will want compensation for waiving the option year which means mostly likely the mets will have to give him a guaranteed 1 year extension for 2005!!!

his agent said that stuff was "preliminary" so who knows, but if he's able to get a reasonable buyout after 1 season this is f*ckin brilliant

even if the 2005 year was guaranteed it would be an incentive based year where he would have to get certain amount of numbers to get paid the big bucks so it sounds like a fair deal at least!!!

You guys are going to be real upset when Minaya signs Sosa to an extension through 2006 at lesser money. The only way the Mets can get Sosa to drop the clause for 2006 is if they offer him a lesser extension for 2006 at about $10 mil with incentives that he can reach $15-18 mil.

i'm sorry that's what i meant, an incentive based extension for 2006 not 2005, anyway yeah he'll get that kind of contract but i'd still rather have him then floyd!!!

From Newsday:

The Mets have no intention of honoring that option year, which automatically kicks in should Sosa be traded, and the Players Association has suggested it would agree to suitable compensation. One baseball official has said the Mets would seek to guarantee a second year, but at a reduced rate with incentives.

From New York Post:

Sosa's contract is the other kicker. He is owed $25 million in the next year — $17M salary, $4.5M buyout for 2006, $3.5M severance fee — and even if his $18M 2006 option is waived, his new team likely would give him some kind of extension. So, although the Mets would be shedding Cliff Floyd (who's owed a total of $13 million over the next two years) and would like the Cubs to pay some of Sosa's contract, Sosa still would be an enormously expensive acquisition.
