Benson On Met Burner

Quote:

The Mets have allowed Al Leiter to test the open market, but they are moving in on closing a deal with Kris Benson, their other primary free agent pitcher. The contract is for three years with an option for 2008.

A person familiar with the negotiations said yesterday that "something could happen by end of the week" that would preclude Benson, one of the team's key midseason acquisitions last summer, from bolting after just two months on the field with the Mets.

The Mets had offered a three-year deal worth nearly $21 million guaranteed last week, with a vesting option for a fourth year based either on innings pitched or games started. Benson's agent, Gregg Clifton, reportedly had countered with a three-year, $25 million offer Monday, and sources believe the numbers are close enough that a compromise can be reached quickly.

As for Leiter, the Mets opted to pay him a $2 million buyout Monday rather than pick up his $10 million option. They had offered him a $4 million base salary with up to $3 million in bonuses, but a source acknowledged the Mets made a revised offer over the weekend, with the same monetary structure and easier-to-reach bonus stipulations.

In addition to the Yankees and Phillies, it is believed that the Cardinals and Dodgers also have expressed interest in the lefthander, although Leiter has maintained a desire to not stray too far from the metropolitan area. If Leiter departs, the Mets have already looked into Carl Pavano, who reportedly received an offer from Philadelphia and is slated to meet with Boston tomorrow. Boston's Derek Lowe, a Scott Boras client in whom the Mets have expressed interest in the past, also remains a possibility.

Why is he going to make over $8 million?

Because the market (set by Garcia and others) for a pitcher of Benson's caliber is 7-8 million

Garcia also pitched in one of the better hitters park in the AL. Benson would be lucky to have a 5.20 there.

your joking right?? garcia signed his extension right after he was dealt from the mariners. so they were looking at his stats from one of the greatest pitching parks in baseball.

Yeah, I guess so, even though freddy Garcia has had a way better career than Benson.

The market seems ridiculously high this year. Cory Lidle had a mediocre season yet got two years with over 3M per. I think Ryan Dempster is making 2M.

Russ Ortiz would be a pretty smart signing, it seems as if he's being undervalued. He'd be a fine 3rd/4th starter instead of Leiter.

I agree Timo. Look at his stats. All he does is win, year after year after year.

btw/ if you compare Ortiz's stats to Clement or Benson, it's no contest. Clement may have great "stuff", but he doesn't win! Benson also is under .500 for his career.

Ortiz has always been on good teams though. He walks way too many guys and has a 4.00 career ERA.

So why not just sign Anna benson? She'd be considerably cheaper.

you know it's weird you say ortiz walks everything but there's someone else that you love who also walks everything and that's zambrano, ortiz may walk everything but he does usual WIN for the teams he pitches for!!!
