Sosa Deal Complex

Quote:

Although the Mets are closing in fast on a new contract for Kris Benson, it appears that a trade for Sammy Sosa will need considerably more time to balance the significant money swap and turn it into a multi-player deal, two baseball officials said yesterday.

Benson is expected to get a three-year contract worth roughly $23 million, and signing the 30-year-old righthander has remained one of the Mets' early priorities as they dive into a busy offseason. Locking up Benson during the same week when Al Leiter was cut loose with a $2.1-million buyout is a strong indication that general manager Omar Minaya has no qualms about shaking up the roster in the next two months. Two other big-ticket players on the block are Cliff Floyd and Mike Piazza.

Floyd is the big chip in any package for Sosa, based on Floyd's $13-million salary over the next two seasons. But the Mets are concerned that the Cubs will want to reach deeper into their organization for another cost-effective player or two if they agree to pick up a fair portion of Sosa's money for next year. Sosa, 36, is scheduled to earn $17 million in 2005, with a $4.5-million buyout if his $18-million option for 2006 is not picked up.

The Mets have no intention of honoring that option year, which automatically kicks in should Sosa be traded, and the Players Association has suggested it would agree to suitable compensation. One baseball official has said the Mets would seek to guarantee a second year, but at a reduced rate with incentives.

the article also says even if the mets get sosa they will make a serious push to sign beltran, they just want to clear floyd's and piazza's contract before they go after him!!!

You know if Texas is so interested in getting Floyd, why don't the Mets try to get Adrian Gonzalez from them.

Why would they give up one of their best prospects for Cliff Floyd?

Why would the Mets do some of the things they have done last season? Why would Texas sign A-Rod to the deal they gave him?

No it doesn't. It says this:

The Rangers talked seriously about acquiring Floyd in the days leading up to last season's trade deadline and have shown mild interest again.

Sosa Not Risk-Free

Quote:

If the Mets acquire Sammy Sosa, it will rank as one of the more controversial moves in their recent history.

Indications are that because of all the financial particulars involved in a proposed trade with the Cubs, any Sosa deal may take a little while. Still, the belief remains that a Sosa-to-the-Mets trade ultimately will get done, so perhaps now is the time to examine just what Sosa would bring to the table.

"It's a risky acquisition with great upside," one American League executive said. "But with any player at that age, it's going to have to be a market where their payroll is such that they have greater tolerance for risk."

There is little doubt that Sosa is a risk, particularly because of his increasing age (he's 36) and decreasing production (last year he hit .253 with 35 homers but just 80 RBIs).

Sosa's contract is the other kicker. He is owed $25 million in the next year — $17M salary, $4.5M buyout for 2006, $3.5M severance fee — and even if his $18M 2006 option is waived, his new team likely would give him some kind of extension. So, although the Mets would be shedding Cliff Floyd (who's owed a total of $13 million over the next two years) and would like the Cubs to pay some of Sosa's contract, Sosa still would be an enormously expensive acquisition.

So why are the Mets thinking about getting Sosa? As one assistant GM noted, "Sosa will always be a marquee name in his game." The assistant GM pointed out that the Mets could be attracted to the fact that Sosa, who has 574 career homers, still possesses good power, could hit milestone homers in a Mets uniform and could be a huge draw to their Dominican population.
