Projected offers for Beltran!

From the end of the season to the opening of Spring Training, there is a period of baseball where the big money is all on the table. It’s something like baseball poker with the table full. No “hand” is more desired than Carlos Beltran and the pot is starting to get big.

There’s a number of offers on the table and through various sources, I’ve been able to put together a bunch of them. While these are believed to be accurate, remember a couple things:
a) We don’t have all the details. We know where the devil lives. Things like voidables, options, private jets, suites, and bonuses aren’t reflected here.

b) In only a few cases do I have rock solid info. All of it is “good” and I can’t differentiate the “great” from the “good” without putting some sources at risk.

c) Money isn’t the only factor. The interesting thing with the teams competing for Beltran is that all are teams that aren’t so much looking for a franchise player as much as they are an “over the top” player.

d) The market isn’t set. The Omar Vizquel signing certainly looks like something from 2001, but no one thinks this will be like that “bubble.” These offers certainly show there’s money out there and will likely set the market if this deal gets done quickly. (I don’t think this will get done quickly.)

e) These are just offers. If I know them, I’m certain that the other GMs know them and will adjust their offers, make counter-offers, fly Beltran in and try to go SMU on them, whatever. This isn’t final, to be sure.

Enough caveats. Here’s the list, in order of which I think is “best” or most likely to be acceptable -

Angels = 5x20 ($100m)
Phillies = 10x15.5 ($155m)
Yankees = 8x18.1 ($145m)
Orioles = 6x18.3 ($110m)
Red Sox = 7x17 ($119m)
Astros = 10x11 ($110m)
Dodgers = 5x18 ($90m)
Cubs = 7x16 ($112m)
Rangers = 7x15.7 ($110m)
White Sox = 6x15 ($90m)

So with the cards on the table, who’s in?

Some of these teams don't make sense to me, but this guy has a pretty good rep.

Wow, 5 years at 20 million per seems kind of hard to turn down. The length isn't what Beltran and Boras want, but at the current market, 20 million per should be an easy decision maker. He could then pursue free agency 5 years later and get probably another 100 million deal if he's still healthy.

I think the Phillies look committed to getting him though by giving the 10 years at 15.5. I would imagine they might end up with him if they are starting out with 10 years.

Of course, this is all speculative, but interesting to read nonetheless

It is a good read, but I doubt he really has all of that on the table. I'd be surprised if he has more than one or two concrete offers.

This sounds like the kind of bullsh*t Scott Boras would intentionally leak out to create a market for him.

Which team doesn't make sense to you, Chili Cheese? Just wondering. I'm sure you have your reasons.

I think he fits all the teams for various reasons
1. Angels- They want to move Anderson back to LF, and what better player to play CF than Beltran
2. Phillies- They tired of Marlon Byrd pretty quickly, and they are dying to get a solid CF.
3. Yankees- Obviously, Bernie is done as a CF
4. Orioles- I'm sure they want better than Luis Matos in CF
5. Red Sox- They were going to deal for Beltran at the deadline, and find a place to trade Damon, so it's no surprise.
6. Astros- Bagwell and Biggio come off the books soon, so they got the money to give him a fairly good deal.
7. Dodgers- Steve Finley is a FA, and I'm sure they want more production out of OF than Jayson Werth, Milton Bradley, and Shawn Green
8. Cubs- They can clear a lot of money by unloading Alou and Sosa. I think they would deal Paterson to a younger team, since his strikeouts and low OBP are killer
9. Rangers- Got lots of young IF talent, but their OF talent is a little weaker. They'd probably like an OF of Mench in LF, Beltran in CF, move Nix to RF.
10. White Sox- Lost Ordonez, Frank Thomas comes off the books soon, and Carlos Lee might be gone soon. Beltran gives them that franchise OF they've had for years, moving Rowand to RF.

It's a little perculiar that the Angels would offer an above market contract of 20 million per season, especially considering Vlad got around 15. But other than that, they seem realistic to me.

If Boras leaked them out, the deals would be as follows

Devil Rays- 10 years, 352 Million
Blue Jays- 14 years, 290 Million
Red Sox- 20 years, 1 billion dollars
Yankees- Lifetime, 2 billion dollars
Orioles- 10 years, 500 million dollars

And so on....and so forth

I hope the Angels get him, and then not have enough left to fix their shitty rotation.

The Dodgers and Red Sox are a surprise to me. I know the Dodgers could be worried about Anaheim getting him, but the Dodgers have quite a few FA that they need to take care of. Plus there front office is in shambles right now. They have Beltre they need to take care of, Perez, Finley.

I also know the Red Sox might be a little worried about the Yankees, but they have players that they need to worry about as well. And all I've been hearing is that the Sox are going to cut payroll. The only way they can go after him is if they can find a taker for Manny, then move Captain caveman to LF.

The Rangers also surprise me considering they have a very good young CF in Lance Nix and they should know by now that they need pitching. I mean what was the real point in getting rid of A-Rod last year.

White Sox = 6x15 ($90m)

Kenny Williams said he won't deal with Boras, so scratch the White Sox off that list.
