Hurry Up And Get This Done Already

General manager Omar Minaya is still keen on acquiring Sosa, and every dollar he saves will be needed to help pay for him. The Mets are trying to get the Cubs to accept Cliff Floyd in that trade, but will still want the Cubs to pick up a lot of Sosa's money.

The 36-year-old Sosa is owed a grand total of $25 million next year, including $17 million in base salary, $3 1/2 million in severance pay and 4 1/2 million to buyout his 2006 option. Floyd has $13 million coming to him over the next two years.

But the Players Association is expected to allow Sosa out of his $18 million option that was supposed to kick in if he is ever traded. The option would have been a deal-breaker, but is now not seen as an obstacle.

The Mets have interest in Angels outfielder Jose Guillen and first baseman Darin Esrtad, who can also play the outfield. Erstad is due to earn $8.25 million, and Guillen $3.5 million, which still leaves them short of Piazza's $15.5 million, although the Angels could be willing to take on more money in the deal.

Under the right circumstances Piazza would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to play for the Angels. He is a huge fan of manager Mike Scioscia, a former teammate with the Dodgers in 1992, and he still has a home in the Los Angeles area.

Union Won't Stop Sosa Clause Drop

Quote:

The Mets are continuing to seek resolution to a complicated deal involving Sammy Sosa, but one important obstacle basically has been eliminated.

A high-ranking official within the Players Association confirmed yesterday that it is "little more than a formality" that the union would not fight a request by Sosa's agents to have an $18 million triggered option in his contract dropped to clear the way for a trade.

Sosa's contract calls for the 2006 option to automatically become vested if he is dealt. The union would not be opposed to dropping it because that money is not considered a guaranteed portion of his contract. "(The union does) have to approve it, but that would not be a problem," the official said. "As of (yesterday), no one (from either club) has approached us about this even being a possibility."

While that would indicate the sides are not close to an agreement, another baseball source with knowledge of the situation said last night, "In my mind, I have no doubt that this deal is happening."
