Mets May Be A Leiter Lighter

Quote:

While the Mets' pursuit of Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa continues to hinge on monetary considerations, their budget for next season also must include the signing of two starting pitchers from either their own stable or from outside the organization.

Kris Benson already is free to sign with any team in baseball, and Al Leiter almost certainly will join him among the free-agent ranks if the Mets as expected decline his $10 million option for next season by today's contractual deadline, instead paying him a $2 million buyout. The Mets plan to continue negotiations with both veterans, but neither is certain to return to Shea next season once other teams become involved in the running for their services.

Leiter, who has expressed a desire to remain in the New York area, also is expected to garner interest from the Yankees, with whom he began his career, and possibly Philadelphia.

Part of the discrepancy in negotiations between the Mets and Leiter's agents, the Hendricks brothers, is believed to be the team's belief that Leiter's $2 million buyout should count as part of his future earnings. They initially had offered him a $4 million base salary for 2005 (plus performance bonuses), but Leiter's agents have argued that they view the $2 million option figure as a guaranteed portion of his expiring contract.

"It's the Mets' decision on the option, so only they know what they are going to do," Randy Hendricks said in an E-mail yesterday. "If they decline the option, we intend to vigorously pursue all opportunities for Al, including the Mets."

Mets Notes

The Mets are expected to formally decline the $10-million team option for 2005 on Leiter's contract today. He will receive a $2-million buyout.

In negotiations this weekend, a source familiar with the situation said, the Mets increased their offer only slightly from the previous $4-million package. That isn't enough to convince Leiter to bypass the open market.

Looking up for Down

Yankees minor-league instructor Rick Down met with George Steinbrenner on Friday to straighten out a miscommunication between the Mets and Yankees. By the end of this week, Down could be hired as the Mets' new hitting coach.

If Leiter doesn't resign he's an idiot. I don't think any team in their right mind will overpay for a 39 year old five inning pitcher. (Although he's a very good one) Leiter is a good pitcher but he just isn't worth 10 million a season anymore.

i think the yankees or phillies would give him 6-8 million for 1 year, i can't believe leiter is gonna leave the mets over 2-4 million dollars, that's just being greedy!!!
