I still don't really see a fit. I don't understand why the Cubs would eat so much money to get back an inferior player. |

Stupid people do stupid things. The Cubs, like the Mets, have a history of being stupid. |

Because of all the baggage that comes with Sosa. It's always about Sosa and not about the Cubs. We will only have to deal with that for 1 year plus it gets Floyd's contract off the 2006 payroll. |

Sosa's deal could be revised for trade November 14, 2004 BY CHRIS DE LUCA Staff Reporter One of the key hurdles in trading Sammy Sosa might be cleared soon because the players association reportedly is leaning toward giving the OK for the slugger's contract with the Cubs to be reworked. The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger quoted a source Saturday saying the union is open to a revised contract because the key issues don't involve guaranteed money. The current deal provides Sosa with two key bonuses if he is traded. The first calls for his $18 million option for 2006 to kick in immediately, and the second involves a $3.5 million severance package to be paid within 30 days of the trade. Because Sosa wants to exit Chicago as much as the Cubs want to trade him, his agent, Adam Katz, has been speaking with union officials to rework the contract to eliminate the automatic option for 2006. The union balked at a similar move last winter, when Alex Rodriguez sought a restructuring of his landmark contract to accommodate a trade to the Boston Red Sox. The union blocked that trade because Rodriguez wanted to restructure the remaining seven years and $179 million left on his contract. Gene Orza, the union's associate general counsel, said such a restructuring would have cut the overall value of the contract, which was a 10-year, $252 million package Rodriguez signed with the Texas Rangers. Orza stressed the collective-bargaining agreement allows a player's contract to be altered only if the player benefits from the changes. Katz's argument centers on the idea that even if Sosa stays in Chicago, there is little hope the Cubs would pick up that option for 2006, making a restructuring more palatable for the union. A concession might involve the Cubs allowing Sosa to negotiate a contract extension with the New York Mets -- or another team -- before a trade is completed. Sending Sosa to the Mets likely would bring outfielder Cliff Floyd to the Cubs. The Mets would have to deal catcher Mike Piazza, who is due $16 million next season, to take on Sosa's salary. That might set the stage for a three-way deal involving the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are interested in Piazza. Asked about the Star-Ledger report, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Saturday night he hasn't been involved in Katz's reported discussions with the union. IMO - If the Mets have to give him a contract extension, FORGET IT! |
