After Months Of Talk, Benson Still Unsigned
- Quote:
-
The Mets were in Atlanta on July 30 when they made two trades in a span of 15 minutes that defined their season and led to a drastic restructuring of the front office. If not for those trades, they would probably have more flexibility this off-season, Jim Duquette might still be the general manager and Minaya might still be with the Expos.
Around 5 p.m. on July 30, the Mets traded Ty Wigginton and two of their top prospects for Benson. At 5:15, they sent their best pitching prospect, Scott Kazmir, to Tampa Bay for Victor Zambrano. In a sense, the deals have dictated everything that has come since, and could dictate the way the Mets navigate the next three months.
When the moves were made, the Mets were six games out of first place in the National League East. The next night, Benson gave up seven runs in an 8-0 loss. The day after, the Mets were swept by the Braves, fell nine games out of first and never contended for a playoff spot again.
It was all O.K., club executives reasoned, because Zambrano was the property of the Mets through 2007 and Benson said he wanted to sign a long-term contract with the team instead of filing for free agency. According to the Mets, the trades were made not so much for the end of last season but for next season and the season after that. By acquiring Zambrano and Benson, the Mets supposedly had a starting rotation cemented and the team could focus its resources on acquiring position players.
But negotiations with Benson, which looked to be a formality in August, sputtered in September. Although Duquette has continued talking with Clifton in recent weeks, and Benson has maintained that he will probably return, the Mets have other priorities. As Minaya left the general managers' meetings on Friday, he seemed to distance himself somewhat from Benson.
"I wasn't here when that trade was done, but the team was in a pennant race and wanted Kris to help close the gap," Minaya said. "There are options for him now, but there are also options for us. We want to sign him and he wants to be here. But with that being said, if we don't sign him, we have to look at the market. We'll want a guy who can be productive in filling that role, and we'll be proactive in filling the slot."
Because Minaya has no personal investment in Benson, and because he had no involvement in the trade, he may be more likely to sever ties with deals that came under criticism almost immediately after they were made.

Calm Before The Winter Storm

A week of discussions and schmoozing provided few tangible results for either the Mets or Yankees, but GMs Omar Minaya and Brian Cashman returned to New York yesterday with a number of intriguing ideas.
Minaya may have been the most active of the executives at the Ritz-Carlton and with the free agent market now open, Minaya has even more players to pursue. Along those lines, Minaya said yesterday that while the Mets hope to re-sign pitcher Kris Benson, he has told Benson's agent that the Mets won't wait forever.
"We have told the agent (Gregg Clifton) that we're trying to get it done, but if we don't get it done ... we will be proactive in filling that spot," Minaya said before checking out of the hotel.
One source said that while the Mets currently are not interested in free agent Pedro Martinez, Minaya likes him and would consider getting involved in negotiations with Martinez if the Mets' pitching plans (in addition to Benson, Al Leiter's status is up in the air) don't work out.

if benson doesn't take that 3 year, 23 million dollar deal then he can shove his thumb up his ass, that deal is way above his market value!!!

It's not like Pavano is the only pitcher out there better than Benson. I would take Radke, Clement, Milton (seconds away from signing with the Yankees), or Odalis Perez over Benson. They are all better pitchers and they will make about what the Mets are offering Benson.

I honestly don't give a sh*t about Kris Benson, but if Minaya doesn't do whatever it takes to keep Anna Benson in NY he should be fired.

well the mets pretty much have to, they gave up some good young prospects for him, he will not get a 3 year 23 million dollar contract from any other team so he'd be f*cking himself if he didn't sign with us!!!

Agreed. They should tell him their offer's only good until Thanksgiving. Every week thereafter a million comes off. The f*cking guy doesn't realize how good he's got it with The Mets. He's a .500 pitcher this last year and under .500 for his career. . .

Unless the Mets get Pavano, they better bring back benson.
dont balme them, they made a very reasonable offer, nothing more they can do
I think they offered too much, to be honest.
well the mets pretty much have to, they gave up some good young prospects for him, he will not get a 3 year 23 million dollar contract from any other team so he'd be f*cking himself if he didn't sign with us!!!
Agreed. They should tell him their offer's only good until Thanksgiving. Every week thereafter a million comes off. The f*cking guy doesn't realize how good he's got it with The Mets. He's a .500 pitcher this last year and under .500 for his career. . .
