Mets Get Serious With Cubs
- Quote:
-
The Mets and Cubs held a second meeting yesterday as they attempted to overcome the significant monetary obstacles to a trade involving Sammy Sosa for Cliff Floyd.
The fact that the teams met again demonstrates an increased level of seriousness, because the first confab between teams here at the general managers' meetings usually involves tossing out trial balloons. The second meeting indicates a player match and a mutual willingness to pursue a deal.
Mets general manager Omar Minaya declined to divulge which teams he met with again yesterday, but a major-league official familiar with the situation said it was the Cubs. The Mets also held their first lengthy meeting with the Rangers to discuss Alfonso Soriano and were also expected to continue discussions with the Dodgers regarding a potential trade involving Shawn Green for Mike Piazza.
Minaya said that when teams meet for a second time it usually suggests things are heating up a bit, although numerous baseball officials said they didn't expect any deals to be consummated soon.

Sosa Still May Meet The Mets
- Quote:

Although they are not embroiled in serious discussions just yet, the Mets again talked to the Cubs about a deal involving Sammy Sosa yesterday.
Met brass sat down with the Cubs late in the afternoon and continued to discuss a trade that would bring Sosa to Shea. The fact that the teams have now spoken several times during the GM meetings is surely an indication that a Sosa swap is something to continue keeping an eye on.
If Sosa is traded, the Mets would part with Cliff Floyd but would want money back to offset Sosa's enormous salary. Sosa is due $17 million next year and if dealt, has an $18 million option for 2006 that automatically kicks in. He also would then have a $19 million option for 2007 but with a $4.5 million buyout. Floyd has two years left for a total of $13 million.
Another team the Mets talked to yesterday for the second time was Texas, which could dangle Alfonso Soriano. Just like last spring, a Soriano-for-Jose Reyes swap has been speculated about, but the Mets have no plans to trade Reyes, and the Rangers, who would love to have Reyes, do not believe the Mets will give him up.

If the deal is Floyd for Sosa do it now, assuming the Cubs pick up a lot of money.

Here's an interesting part of the article.
"Meanwhile, the Mets haven't made significant progress with Leiter and Benson, who will be able to talk to other teams starting today. The Mets have told Benson that if they didn't get a deal done by last night's deadline of exclusivity, they would look elsewhere, but they are still likely to continue a dialogue."

I could see the Mets getting Lieber if they decide not to pursue Benson. Lieber would thrive in Shea and would cost maybe less than Benson.

Yeah, there's no reason for the Mets not to do that deal. Sosa may be past his prime, but Sosa's still going to offer you more offensively than Floyd, who can't stay healthy.
If the Mets got that deal done, I see no point to a Piazza for Green deal, since Green isn't that good of a first baseman, and that's where he'd likely end up with Sosa already in RF. I think they should concentrate on a 1B, possibly dealing Piazza to a team like Boston, who if they lose Varitek, would love a stopgag like Piazza. Piazza has to go in my view no matter what, since he costs too much money to not play everyday.

i think if they deal for sosa they'll just keep piazza, as timo said the mets have to make the move if it's floyd for sammy and a certain amount of money, i know alot of people don't want sosa but he's way better then floyd!!!
