Minaya Still Likes The Players He Scouted

The general managers' meeting ends on Friday, and for all the moves that have not been made, Minaya has sent some clear signals to his peers. He is one of the few general managers interested in trading for Sosa, the Chicago Cubs outfielder, and he is one of the few members of the Mets' organization voicing a commitment to Reyes.

When the Rangers spoke with the Mets about trading Alfonso Soriano for Reyes in spring training, Fred Wilpon, the Mets' principal owner, put an end to speculation by walking onto the practice field in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and flinging an arm around Reyes's shoulders. Wilpon whispered into Reyes's ear, "You're not going anywhere."

From then on, no one echoed Wilpon's statement or sentiment. Some Mets groused about Reyes's recurring hamstring injuries. The Rangers, who have no such problems with Reyes, took another run at him during a meeting with the Mets on Thursday. According to one American League official who has been involved in the discussions, the Rangers were rebuffed because the Mets have no interest in trading Reyes for Soriano. When one general manager quizzed Minaya about the talks later on, he said Minaya told him, "Why would I do that?"

"When you have a talent like José," Minaya said, "you have to commit to that talent."

Although Minaya would not term Reyes untouchable, he gave him the kind of endorsement that has been missing since last spring, when Reyes was billed as the future of the franchise. Reyes then strained his hamstring, had three setbacks during rehabilitation, required the assistance of two specialists, and fractured his leg shortly after his return. Reyes, 21, missed nearly four months of the season with injuries, and the Mets seemed so exasperated that they fired their head trainer and appeared ready to let another team try to heal him.

good, this could all be bullsh*t but i hope that's not the case, keep reyes here!!!
