Swing For Sosa

Quote:

Despite his declining production and plummeting public image, Sammy Sosa still has fans in Flushing.

Mets GM Omar Minaya is exploring ways to bring the embattled Cubs slugger to New York, several major league sources said yesterday, and his arrival in New York would likely mean the departure of franchise face Mike Piazza and outfielder Cliff Floyd.

"The money would have to make sense," said one official who had spoken with Minaya. "It really has to be a wash, and that won't be easy to do."

Sources said Minaya will not proceed unless he is confident that Sosa will be healthy.

But the groundwork may have moved ahead at the GM meetings last night when Mets assistant GM Jim Duquette met with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Sosa agent Adam Katz at a bar at the Ritz-Carlton. Nothing is imminent, a source said, "but Omar is serious about pursuing this."

Minaya Meets With Sosa's Agent

Quote:

One day after the Mets spoke to the Cubs about a possible deal involving Cliff Floyd and Sammy Sosa, Omar Minaya had a 30-minute meeting with Sosa's agent in his hotel room here at the Ritz-Carlton, feeding speculation that the Mets might pursue the Cubs' disaffected slugger.

The agent, Adam Katz, walked into Minaya's room at about 5:20 p.m. and came out just before 6 p.m. But after the meeting the agent continued to toss cold water on the notion. "We did not talk about Sammy Sosa," he said.

About an hour later, Katz sat in the hotel lounge with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Mets vice president Jim Duquette. Katz would not reveal the nature of the discussion, saying he and Minaya are just good friends, but if a trade is ever worked out in principle, Katz would have to play an integral role in facilitating it.

But even if they never discussed a potential deal, the possibility of a trade for Sosa still exists, as does a trade involving Mike Piazza, although that would be more problematic. Minaya had preliminary conversations with the Dodgers about a possible swap of Shawn Green and Piazza on Tuesday, which he and Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta downplayed yesterday.

i'll say this, i'd rather have sosa then green!!! :peace:

Guys, these are all nothing but rumors. Very unlikely the Mets trade for Sosa. We will here a shitload of names being floated around like Zito, Soriano, Sosa, Green, Cabrera, Ramirez.
