Minaya Ready To Deal
- Quote:
-
As Omar Minaya recreates a typical conversation with a fellow general manager, he starts out sounding like so many other baseball businessmen, speaking in sports platitudes and corporate clichés.
Then, right when his listeners look ready to roll their eyes and go see someone across the room, he changes into one of the guys from his old neighborhood in Queens, honest and blunt, worried more about the substance of his message than the style of his delivery.
"Either we have a deal or we don't," Minaya says. "Let's not run around in circles. It's simple. You've got this. I've got that. Can we do the deal or not?"
The consensus among general managers who have descended on the Ritz-Carlton Hotel here is that no significant trades will be consummated during their annual meeting this week. They insist that talks are only preliminary and will probably not get serious for more than a month. As Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday, "I don't see anything coming out of these meetings."
Cashman could have been speaking for most of his peers, but not for Minaya, who is attacking the meetings with his trademark authority. He has met with most of the teams that may be willing to trade big-money marquee players in blockbuster deals. Minaya spent Tuesday talking with the Chicago Cubs, who are mulling what to do with their discontented outfielder Sammy Sosa, then discussing a trade with Los Angeles that would send Mike Piazza back to the Dodgers for Shawn Green.
Minaya was even more active on Wednesday, meeting with six teams, including the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers, and the Cubs a second time. The Mets may be interested in Oakland pitcher Barry Zito, who flourished under the pitching coach Rick Peterson but tailed off a bit after Peterson left for the Mets last season. Minaya is also believed to have interest in the Rangers' Alfonso Soriano, the former Yankees second baseman, who might have gone to the Mets last spring if José Reyes had been part of the package.
Because Oakland and Texas are looking to unload high-priced contracts and do not want any in return, the Mets may have to include Reyes if they are going to reach an agreement. Besides third baseman David Wright, Reyes is the Mets' only top-tier player who does not have a multimillion-dollar contract. The Mets have become frustrated with Reyes's recurring leg injuries and are aware that Oakland and Texas could use a middle infielder.
why do i have a feeling minaya is gonna pull some kinda trade off soon!!!

He probably wouldn't. Mike is an icon and he's still capable of putting up MVP numbers and Jose Reyes is all talent and he's due to breakout.
At this point, ya'll should be willing to trade Reyes for Gregg Zaun. He's NEVER, EVER gonna stay healthy.

If Minaya trades Reyes for Soriano he'd officially pass the incompetance requirement that every Mets GM needs.
