I think it was also after the year when the Nets went to the finals for the first time in their history and when people were doubting his skills as a leader and as a PG. :bag:

Suns' Marbury arrested on DUI charge

Posted: Friday February 08, 2002 12:33 PM
Updated: Friday February 08, 2002 2:35 PM

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Phoenix Suns point guard Stephon Marbury was arrested Friday on a charge of extreme driving under the influence after an officer saw his car weaving on the road.

An officer started following Marbury because he appeared to be speeding, then watched as the car began moving in and out of its lane, Scottsdale police spokesman Officer Scott Reed said.

Marbury was clocked at 75 mph in a 50 mph zone and pulled over, Reed said. Marbury's speech was slurred and his breath smelled like alcohol, the police claimed.

A portable breath test indicated Marbury had a blood alcohol level of .153, the police said. The legal limit for driving in Arizona is 0.08. A blood test will also be conducted.

Marbury was booked into the city jail on charges of extreme DUI, DUI and speeding, Reed said. Extreme DUI, a charge that can be used when a person has a blood alcohol level of at least 0.15, carries harsher penalties.

Reed said Marbury was held for about two hours before being released. The case was referred to the city prosecutor's office.

"I must accept responsibility for my actions and I apologize to my teammates, the organization and the community for whatever embarrassment I have caused," Marbury said in a statement.

Suns president Bryan Colangelo, who was in Philadelphia for the All-Star game, said the team would act after the details of the arrest and the legal outcome were known.

"We are extremely disappointed to learn of this incident involving Stephon Marbury," Colangelo said.

Marbury was traded to the Suns last year by the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd.

I know this isn't where bbfreak was headed with that, but I do think that it would help. Not calling anyone racist and I'm the last one to play that card, but I think that this team would get more support from the country if there were a couple more "Fred Hoiberg's" and fewer tattooed and cornrowed "Carmelo's". Not just that fact that the shooting would be better, but people find it easier to root for people who they can relate to better.

Don't be ridiculous.

A lot of track and field stars are black and people root for them. People just do not want to root for a bunch of clowns that looks like street thugs and don't play basketball the right way.

Dont be so damn ignorant. Like Strider said, would you stop rooting for the Yankees just because they dont play fundamental baseball? Would you call Giambi, Sheff and ARod thugs for not playing baseball "the right way"? Enough with this bullsh*t about not playing fundamental basketball.

Street thugs? care to elaborate? Do you not like them because they were jewelry and wear caps backwards and wear old school jerseys? Would you like them more if they came out with Metallica, Creed and Alter Bridge shirts?

yes i would love them, these young thugs are ruining the game and turning USA basketball into a joke!!!

Ridiculous. You guys are trying so hard to bring race and music taste into this. It's not about race or music, it's about them looking like street thugs and making Americans look bad!!

Meanwhile ALL the other athletes at the games, American, Canadian, French, African, Chinese, Japanese, ect., they show up dressed classy and acting classy, with smiles from ear to ear proud and thrilled to be there. When the Wu Tang Clan walked in, I was embarassed to be American, they looked like f*cking clowns. Allen Iverson with that "look at me, I'm so tough" scowl on his face, starring at the camera like it was his worst enemy. Tim Duncan was the only player that looked happy to be there!!

Yeah, if they showed up looking like this (some of the music I love), I would be SO PROUD of them!! :serious: :serious: :serious:

Silliness. Instead of looking like American street thugs, they would look like Crazy American a-holes!

This isn't about race, this isn't about rap vs rock, this is about them carrying themselves to look like "Hip-Hoppers" instead of with class like everyone else. I'm sure some of those white-boy swimmers listen to Metallica, and Static-X, and Manson, and such. But they didn't walk in there with tight jeans, chain wallets, and thier faces pierced!! They walked in with class.

Unlike Rob, who can't mention the team without calling them thugs. Rob, who doesn't like the sport and who I doubt knows much about it, claims its because of fundamentals. Like he knows or would care about the difference. He doesn't like them (and people like them) because of how they look and the image they project.

My point here is that he tried to counter one of my points, but ended up proving it.

I have been watching basketball since before I could remember. I was a basketball fan before I even ever watched baseball, hockey, and football. My room was covered with Jordan and Magic Johnson posters.

Just because I hate the way the game is played now, and don't watch too much anymore, doesn't mean I don't know the difference between good basketball and bad basketball.

I have 2 issues with the team:

1. The way they carry themselves

2. The way they play the game

Stop trying to mix the 2 of them together. #1 has NOTHING to do with #2.

I don't get why people have a problem with the reason Rob doesn't like this team. It's his choice. It's merged with some of the same reasons other people, including myself, have discussed. I didn't see the opening ceremonies, but if I did, I bet I would have felt the same way Rob did about our players' appearances.

I didn't see the opening ceremonies (for good reason), but I probably would have had a similar opinion. Not embarassed to be an American, but disappointed that they didn't have enough sense to know how they're supposed to act, especially on such a platform. I can understand Rob feeling the way he does about that. But, we're not talking just about the opening ceremonies. He choses to call them thugs and drug addicts. That's the problem I have.

Maybe the "thugs" and "drug addicts" was a little overboard, but I can understand why Rob is upset. They all looked unhappy to be there, like it was a chore, while everyone else was excited to be representing their countries. They were an embarrassment to the American people and to the world by the way they looked.

Here's someone who wanted to be there, but was never asked. He would have made a team a lot better. He wanted to be there so much that he even mentions going as the manager or water boy!

Artest: Where was my Olympic invite?

FOXSports.com
Posted: 3 hours ago

As if there wasn't enough criticism heading Team USA's way these days, Pacers forward Ron Artest has decided to pile on.

Artest's critique of the underachieving Americans? He wasn't asked to join them in the Athens.

"I was the Defensive Player of the Year and didn't get an invite," Artest said while speaking Monday at the Park Avenue Country Club in Manhattan, where he was promoting the 12th annual All-Star Classic to benefit Wheelchair Charities. "It's frustrating not to have gotten a phone call."

Given the United States' defensive liabilities so far at the Olympics, where the Americans have lost twice before the medal round, Artest's abilities at that end of the court certainly might have come in handy.

And it's not as if Kevin Garnett, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant or Jason Kidd bumped Artest from the squad. All four of those superstars turned down invites from USA Basketball, opening the door for a trio of players — LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade — who just completed their rookie seasons in the NBA and one who's yet to play a single game as a professional (Emeka Okafor) to make the team ahead of the Pacers All-Star.

"I was one of the guys who wanted to be there," Artest said. "Look, so many guys turned it down. After all the top guys, there's room for me.

"I don't know what it was. All I know is it's something that only comes around every four years and I would have liked to have been part of it. I'd have been the water boy or the manager or whatever. I wanted to go."

I've followed Artest since his freshman year at St. John's and was so excited to see him still available at #15 in the Draft, only to see the Knicks choose Weis. This guy might be a nutjob at times, but he plays hard and is a winning player.

I can't say much for his dad though, who was scalping tickets while sitting in front of me at Alumni Hall during Ron's freshman season! They were obviously free tickets given to family members. I was in the 3rd row, Ron's dad in the 2nd. My dad has since seen him still scalping, even after Ron started his NBA career!

Yeah, we weren't shocked when Ron was still playing at St. John's since it was well known that they had like 15 family members living in one apartment in Queens, but my dad was very disappointed to see Mr. Artest still scalping now that his son is a multi-millionaire.

Wow.

Back then, he had to hustle to feed the tribe, now I guess its just become natural.
Does he have a job? I know that the parents of some wealthy people continue to work (Oprah's father was still cutting hair until like 5 years ago), but why the hell would someone continue to do something illegal and risky? I wonder what the son thinks of it.
