from rotoworld:

Knicks re-signed forward Vin Baker to a one-year contract.
Baker is expected to make about $3 million. This deal was agreed to weeks ago, but the Knicks had held off on making it official because they had other things that hoped to get done first.

I heard. :dunno: We need a center and I won't be happy unless we get one. Maybe we can package Kurt Thomas with ____ and try to make a move for one. I do want Sweet Stuff starting.

Seems like Nazr Mohammed and Vin Baker is the best we can do at center for a while. I guess we'll just have to accept it. We missed out on Dampier and every other free agent center this year. This was a rare offseason in that so many talented centers were available. Unless we're getting Clark or Gadzuric (not the cream of the crop by any means), I think we really missed out and we're going to regret it for a few years, unless we somehow get lucky and get a center somehow. Teams rarely trade their good centers, so we'll be hard pressed to find one that suits our needs.

Zeke has to go work them phones and kiss some asses. I don't know if or think he can come up with anything, but if you dig far enough, you'll pull something out of your ass.

Keon Clark wants no part of NY.

I was discussing centers with a friend last night. There really aren't any legit ones left besides Shaq, Divac, and Yao Ming. Most of the others are either white stiffs who are only in the league because they're tall or power forwards playing center, including Dampier, who is really a power forward.

I disagree with that statement. Brad Miller, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Erick Dampier are all good centers, in my mind. The problem is that the list severely tails off from there, if you don't include the good PFs who play center (Ben Wallace, Marcus Camby, Jermaine O'Neal, etc...). Truthfully, there's a lot of PFs that play center because they're not talented enough to succeed as much at PF. Realistically, though, I don't feel that Dampier falls into this group. IMHO, the league is in a major shortage of centers, and they're desperately trying to find good ones from anywhere. We'll see how successful they are.

My bad, I forgot Big Z, who is a legit center. I agree with you though. I didn't say guys like Brad Miller aren't good centers. It's just that they're not really centers. Miller, Jermaine O'Neal, Big Ben Wallace, Dampier, Camby, Brian Grant, etc. are all power forwards playing center in a league that now lacks real centers. Even Alonzo Mourning was a power forward playing center, albeit a dominant center. He was a PF at G-Town since Mutumbo was their C. He was successful as a center because of his determination and moves, but he was really a PF. Mutumbo is a real center, but he's done.

Well, Baker for $13 MM a year is a complete and utter ripoff. Baker for $3 MM a year isn't bad. But, yes, IMHO, the Knicks struck out pretty good in the center sweepstakes this offseason. Baker was a fallback, IMHO.

He signed the contract when he was coming off an all-star year, I believe. Then he was traded to Seattle and he went from being a 20-10 player to an 18-8 player, to a 16-7 player, to a 12-6 player. :serious:

Signing Dampier to a 6 yr, 60 million dollar contract isnt good at all. Damp is 30, by the time he reaches 34, he could become a waste of height. Is Chris Andersen still available? He might be a solid pickup to the bench.

The latter. Baker was a stud when he signed the deal for that money. The Celts traded for him when he wasn't a stud for the same money. :no1:
