Yankees news for August 17 ------------ Click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040817054841991 Yankees look for answers August 17 New York Daily News: Even though the regular season still has a month and a half to go, the Yankees have a full slate of questions they know need answering as they visit the Metrodome tonight for a potential playoff preview matchup with the AL Central-leading Twins. Who will be in the October rotation? How much can the Yanks hope for from Jason Giambi? Who will play center, Bernie Williams or Kenny Lofton? The rest of the season will offer the raw data that Joe Torre needs to make his final calls. While the Yankees have to decide who among Mike Mussina, Javier Vazquez, Orlando Hernandez, Kevin Brown, Esteban Loaiza and Jon Lieber will make up their playoff rotation, at least they know they'll have enough healthy starters. Giambi's status is less clear. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spencer hired by Bombers August 17 New York Daily News: After coming back to the Yankees on a minor-league contract yesterday, Shane Spencer will work out for a few days at the Yanks' Tampa complex and then head to Triple-A Columbus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Classy Clark accepts sub role August 17 Newark Star-Ledger: On Sunday morning in Seattle, the Yankees were slow to arrive at Safeco Field. Most of the players rode on the second and last bus, leaving just the minimum time to attend chapel services and hit the field for batting practice. By the time most of his teammates had arrived, Clark had been at the ballpark for hours -- running, lifting weights, working in the batting cage with hitting coach Don Mattingly. Clark was sitting at his locker, drenched in sweat, when many of his teammates rolled in. He didn't figure to play that afternoon against the Mariners -- Clark has played just twice since John Olerud made his Yankees debut two weeks ago -- but he was going to be ready if called upon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Williams Goes On A Power Trip August 17 Hartford Courant: Bernie Williams is not saying much these days. It seems he is on another 'journey within,' to appropriate the title of his CD. He is having a good trip. Is he feeling good about the way he's swinging the bat? "Yeah," Williams said. "I guess so." Is he doing anything differently? "No," Williams said as he dressed for the Seattle-to-Minneapolis leg of another crazy quilt trip for the Yankees. Reading Williams' mood was never easy. Reading him as a player is trickier than ever. "He's proud," general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's shown over the years, if you underestimate him, he's going to make you pay for it." Once a fixture in the cleanup spot, Williams has hit everywhere but third in 2004. His hot streaks have been shorter and further apart, his cold spells colder than in the past - .194 in April, .184 in July. A four-time Gold Glove winner in center field, he has played 37 games as the DH. Even with a recent surge - he's up to .258 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 109 games - this will be his least productive full season in a decade. "He's still dangerous, he's still a threat," said manager Joe Torre, who put Williams in the cleanup spot last weekend. "He's hitting .250-260, but when he hits in a certain situation, I think more of Bernie Williams than the year he's having. He's capable of the things that made him a good player." ------------ Click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040817054841991 |
