Yankees news for August 16 --------- click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040816065003276 Edgar: Sayonara, Yanks August 16 New York Daily News: There were so many Japanese themes coursing through Yankees-Mariners yesterday that it would've felt right had the game been played at Tokyo Dome instead of Safeco Field. Japanese great Akira Ogi threw out the first pitch - to Ichiro Suzuki - and both Suzuki and Hideki Matsui hit home runs. Former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori visited both players before the game. Ultimately, the lingering image may have been a goodbye present from a longtime Yankee nemesis, who took advantage of an uncommon off-day for the Yankees' bullpen in Seattle's 7-3 victory in front of 46,335. The Yankees, known for comebacks this season, suffered because of one - they had held a 3-1 lead after a two-run homer by Matsui in the sixth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jorge ails as A-Rod gets well August 16 New York Daily News: Jorge Posada is the latest Yankee to be felled by the flu - the catcher was a late scratch from the lineup yesterday after complaining of headaches and other aches and pains, Joe Torre said. Posada said the flu hit him Saturday night. Torre hopes to have him back behind the plate when the Yankees start a series in Minnesota tomorrow. But, Torre admitted, he also had said Alex Rodriguez would be back from the flu quickly. Rodriguez did join his teammates at the ballpark yesterday, but left before the start because he was serving the second game of his four-game ban for fighting Jason Varitek. Rodriguez looked pretty good after spending two days in bed and drinking, he said, "23 bottles of water." Rodriguez dropped his appeal of the ban when he realized he was too sick to play for several days. "With my sickness, it was a moot point," Rodriguez said. "The only regret I had is I wish I'd have done it on Friday." Rodriguez will miss five consecutive games because he sat out Friday's game sick and then dropped his appeal on Saturday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bombers Blocked Boomer August 16 New York Post: The Yankees aren't interested in Boomer III, but they made sure David Wells doesn't pitch for any other club besides the Padres this season. According to industry sources, the Yankees put in a claim on Wells when the Padres placed the veteran lefty on waivers last week. The Yankees weren't thinking of bringing Wells back for a third stint in The Bronx, but were blocking him from being traded to Boston or any other team in contention for an AL playoff spot. "He's cleared waivers and been blocked," the source said of Wells, who is 7-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 21 starts for the Padres. "He's not going anywhere." GM Brian Cashman refused to comment on the blocking move and when asked if the Padres and Yankees held discussions concerning a possible deal for Wells that had Jon Lieber going to San Diego. Like every other GM, Cashman is under orders from MLB not to discuss the waiver process. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matsui, Ichiro go deep before visitors from Japan August 16 Newsday: Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki homered yesterday, only the second time two Japanese players did that in the same major-league game. They did it with two very interested countrymen among the 46,335 fans at Safeco Field. Former Japanese prime minister Yoshiro Mori met with both players before the game. Suzuki caught the ceremonial first pitch thrown by Akira Ogi, his manager in Japan, who told him to go only by "Ichiro." Matsui, who hit cleanup for the Yankees for the first time this season, went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Suzuki went 3-for-4 and stole two bases. Matsui said, "I think was able to watch a really good game. I'm very happy for him." Said Suzuki, "I think this is a good memory for Mr. Ogi." --------- click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040816065003276 |
