Bernie paving the way for Beltran

Bernie Williams is too proud of his place in Yankees history and too competitive a champion to surrender his job as the club's primary center fielder, at least to a fellow aging veteran like Kenny Lofton. But if Williams is finally supplanted in center next year by free-agent-to-be Carlos Beltran -- a virtual certainty, if George Steinbrenner has his way -- it probably won't sting so much for Williams, who just might be the person most responsible for the potential move.

Not only did Williams tell the five-tool-star Beltran earlier this season that he hopes he signs with the Yankees this winter, Williams helped set Beltran on his course to stardom and seemingly inevitable pinstripes.

Williams was Beltran's favorite player as a child in Puerto Rico, a fellow countryman and center fielder after whom Beltran tried to model his playing style. When Beltran signed his first pro contract at age 18, in 1995, he found himself on the same winter ball team, the Arecibo Lobos, as his hero, and in their first conversation, Beltran, a natural right-handed hitter, asked Williams what it would take to become a switch-hitter like him.

"He told me, 'Man, you have to work hard,'" Beltran said last week at Shea. "He gave me some tips. 'Try to stay in the middle of the field, try to take the ball the opposite way.' As a kid, I always wanted to be like him, that kind of player. That was the only thing that was missing, being a switch-hitter."

Less than a year later, Beltran was a full-time switch hitter and, by age 21, he was in the big leagues. Now, he's a superstar and the most coveted player expected to be a free agent this winter.

We don't need Beltran. Did you see Bernie's homerun yesterday? Did you see the double? And he looked just fine in CF. If it ain't broke, don't waste money trying to fix it. If there was something wrong, why would Beltran idolize him? The Bern Man's got things under control.

Teams run marathons on Bernie's arm and he's lost more than a step in CF over the last few years. Beltran would prevent the runner from taking an extra base and he'll run down balls that Bernie can't get to anymore. If Bernie wants Beltran, get Beltran.

Obviously Bernie can still hit. It would be great if he starts taking grounders at first so Giambi can DH.

Why not add Kent in the offseason also? And Pedro while you are at it. Any other position you need an allstar at?

Stop the f*cking trolling.

Beltran is a need. We have no one who can play well at CF.

And not for nothing a guy "like" Pedro is a need. We need another front of the rotation guy, Vazquez is still not proven and KB gets hurt all the time.

I'm in the middle between you and the troll. It's not a NEED. It would be nice to improve the OF defense, but Beltran himself is not a need. He'd be the best fit, but offensively he would be a luxury.

His glove in CF is a need, not his bat. But you can't sit here and say Pedro would be overkill, an ace of the staff is a need.

I want to ask you people something. We sign Beltran to play CF, move Bernie to DH. What the hell do we do with Giambi? He can't play 1st full time, and when healthy is one of the best hitters in the game.

Exactly. That's why Bernie has to learn to play some first base. Giambi will need to DH. That's why Beltran's availability is actually one year too early to be an ideal situation.

:serious: <- And you should know why I posted that.

Mets fan, this team doesn't need a #5 hitter who has 35 HR/100 RBI potential, just a good defensive centerfielder. All we need is someone with range and a good arm and we could bat him 8th or 9th. We need Beltran's defense and the offense is a bonus. Don't be jealous because after coming off a 79-83 season, your owner will most likely low-ball the targeted free agents while the Yankees will go hard after what they need/want.
