Mets Must Decide On Piazza
- Quote:
-
With six weeks left in this season, and the Mets playing for next year, the games have once again become less important than the decisions they will influence.
As usual, the future of the Mets hinges on Mike Piazza. For a sub-.500 team, the Mets are surprisingly settled at most major spots, but team officials acknowledge they must use the remainder of this season to pick a position - once and for all - for Piazza, their catcher turned first baseman turned catcher.
What the Mets do with him will dictate how they approach the off-season and how their lineup will look on opening day in 2005. If the Mets decide Piazza can truly play first base, they can pursue a catcher in the winter. But if they choose to place him behind the plate, a more likely course of action, they will probably go after a top-flight first baseman.
The best first basemen who will be available as free agents include Toronto's Carlos Delgado, who is average on defense, and Arizona's Richie Sexson, who is still negotiating with that team. Anaheim's Troy Glaus, a third baseman, will be a free agent and might be able to move across the diamond. The Mets are also expected to make a run at Kendry Morales, a 21-year-old first baseman and outfielder from Cuba, but the competition for Morales will be stiff, and he is not considered ready for the majors.

Besides the Piazza predicament, the Mets have most of their important pieces in place. They intend to re-sign pitcher Kris Benson and have one of the deepest starting rotations in the majors. They could stand some alterations in the bullpen, but Braden Looper has solidified the closer spot.
The Mets also plan to restructure the contract of Richard Hidalgo and keep him in right field. Mike Cameron will be back in center, and although Cliff Floyd has been the subject of recent trade speculation, he is the only left-handed power hitter in the lineup and lends a strong voice to a quiet clubhouse.

Are you f*ckin kidding me? Arizona gave up like 6 or 7 players for him and now they might not resign him?

so every organization that refuses to just give their players to the Yankees deserves to lose?
The Yankees had zero prospects to give the D-Backs. It had nothing to do with Colangelo.

It was mostly due to Colangelo.
