New York to try six-man rotation

August 13, 2004

SEATTLE (AP) -- The New York Yankees are going to use a six-man rotation -- for now.

Manager Joe Torre said Friday night that right-hander Mike Mussina, who went on the disabled list July 6 because of a stiff right elbow, will start next Tuesday night at Minnesota.

Mussina pitched three scoreless innings in a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Columbus Wednesday night and pitched in the New York bullpen before Friday night's game.

``He feels confident he's ready to go,'' Torre said of Mussina, who has a 9-6 record and a 5.20 ERA in 18 starts this season. He said Mussina wouldn't go more than five innings against the Twins.

Torre said pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre made the decision to keep right-handers Jon Lieber, Esteban Loaiza, Kevin Brown, Javier Vazquez and Orlando Hernandez in the Yankees' rotation for at least two turns.

``It's basically to keep everybody involved,'' he said. ``I trust Mel and it makes my job easier not to have to tell somebody he's not part of the rotation.''

:furious: - IT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA!

Moose & Vaz need to work on regular rest.
Sure the 6 man would probably work for Brown, Duque & Lieber, but why throw the entire rotation out of whack just to keep Loiaza in the starting rotation.

Leiber has pitched well lately & deserves to be the 5th starter, so Estaban will have to deal w/ the situation, f*ck it if it hurts his feelings, this is a gutless move IMO.
Decide on the 5 starters & get the rotation ready for October!

I agree with all of your reasoning behind not liking this idea. I wouldn't mind Loaiza getting a couple of more starts to see if he could work out of it, but not at the expense of having pitchers like Mussina get extra rest in between starts.

I don't like the idea, but I am certainly not furious over it, so no overreaction here. I just wouldn't do it.

Once Loaiza sucks in his next start, he's going to the pen and there won't be anymore 6-man rotation. :agent:
