Thank God we didn't sign him.

:serious:

no you just signed kenny lofton!!! :peace:

What does Kenny Lofton have to do with this? And, actually, I'd rather have Lofton.

steinbrenner wanted speed at the top of the lineup after seeing the marlins in the world series so instead of going after kaz they signed lofton to leadoff and play centerfield!!!

Joel Sherman Article From Yesterday

Quote:

Kaz was comfortable enough with the scenario that during Seibu's postseason training camp last year, he took grounders at second.

The only hitch was GM Brian Cashman had to convince George Steinbrenner that Kaz be signed, Soriano shifted to center and Bernie Williams be made the permanent DH. Steinbrenner, having seen Florida's pesky leadoff man/center fielder Juan Pierre in the World Series, wanted Kenny Lofton to play center and was obsessed with Gary Sheffield.

Kaz kept putting off signing with the Mets, the officials said, to wait on the Yanks. Asked about it yesterday, Kaz initially said through his interpreter that it was long ago and he did not remember dealing with the Yankees before saying he did not negotiate with them. But the officials said Kaz expressed a willingness to play second for the Yanks because they had Derek Jeter (so there would be no shame moving to the new position just as there was no shame for Hideki Matsui moving to left because the established Williams was there), the Yanks had such a great chance to win and the Yanks had handled Hideki Matsui's debut season so well. But finally Kaz could wait no longer and agreed on Dec. 7 to play short for the Mets.
