Mets Hot For Cuban Standout

Quote:

The Mets are one of a handful of teams that have expressed the most interest so far in Cuban star Kendry Morales.

David Valdes, the attorney for the 21-year-old, switch-hitting Morales, estimated to The Post that he's had approximately 20 inquiries from teams and figured perhaps 15 could make strong bids. In addition to the Mets, Valdes said the other teams expressing the most interest have been the Yankees, Red Sox, Mariners, Angels and Marlins.

Teams are not allowed to discuss dollar figures yet with Morales, a first baseman/outfielder, because although he has established Dominican residency, he is still waiting for MLB approval.

he's a first baseman!!! :serious:

But:

We have no idea how good his defense is.

We have no idea if he can hit Major league pitching.

We have no idea if he's really the age he says he is.

We have no idea if he can handle the pressure of playing in a big city.

he's going to have a tryout for all 30 mlb teams, i'd be willing to take a chance on him if he shows he has something, who knows how good he is, the scouts and newspapers say he was a great hitter in cuba but contreras was a great pitcher over there and look how that turned out! all i'm saying is i'd give him consideration, the mets need a first baseman and he could fill that void!!!

If you can't handle pressure you aren't "great".

But back on topic...

A tryout is meaningless. All it will consist of is a workout. It does nothing to show how he'll handle major league pitching, how he'll handle pressure, etc.

let some other team take a chance on a total unknown. if the Mets are going to go after a FA 1b I'd rather have an established player like Konerko.

We have to stop accepting the second or third best option. Delgado and Konerko are FAs, I don't want a guy like morales that has a good chance to be a bust.

personally, I'd like to stay away from Delgado. But I'd rather have him than morales.

what did i just say, konerko is my first choice as well, the mets should go after him, all i'm saying is that morales could be a fall back option that's all!!!

If he'd be willing to sign a minor league contract, then perhaps we should consider it. Otherwise, look for something else!

I heard Piazza's latest injury is a cause of him squatting all these years. That would mean he'd probably be at 1st base next season. :serious:
